CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
In the field of education, Technology has become a major component. In recent decades,
There has been an increase in the use of Information and communication Technologies (ICT).
And there is a spread of network technologies which the new e-learning approach evolved
(Kahiigi et al., 2008). The demand of innovative learning approaches has been gradually
increasing since most people want to use these to expand their knowledge and acquire more new
skills. Today, the use of technology has become more prevalent in schools and other educational
institutions.
Social media has become the most important communication tool in recent times. Social
networking exists and provides communication among people, regardless of the distance, making
it receptive people easily share information, files and pictures and videos, create blogs and send
messages, and conduct real-time conversations. Social media and social forums are ways of
communications directly with other people socially. Social media playing a large and influential
role and decision-making in the global world economically, politically, socially and
educationally.
According to Saha and Karpinski (2016), students at universities in the United States
(US) studied about the relationship between social media use (and Skype™ use) and their
academic performance. The result of the study is that the use of social media and SkypeTM was
positively predictive of life satisfaction and there was a positive relation between life satisfaction
and academic performance. The positive impact of social media use on the perceptions of their
experiences by international students, which can in turn have a positive impact on their academic
performance.
Social Media is known for its collective network of collaborative sharing and networking
of knowledge and content, which are all vital tools to use and can be incorporated in learning by
students. In a research conducted by Josan Tamayo and Giselle Dela Cruz (2014) entitled
determining the relationship of Social Media with the Academic Performance of I.T Students of
Centro Escolar University in Malolos, more than 50% of the respondents are not satisfied with
their performance at school. The researchers concluded that Social media usage of students
largely affects their respective academic performances. In the results, the students who
participated in the study rarely participate in class discussion and activities, and do not attend
class regularly.
Maitem et al, added about the negative effect of social media, a study conducted from the
students of Davao City National High School. The study showed that there is a negative effect of
the relationship between social media and the study habit of the students. Majority of
respondents used Facebook for making friends and chatting. Thus, students have less study time
due to the heavy participation on social media networks but somehow there could be a possible
outcome to be considered just like what type of social networking site a student is using
Many studies explored the advantages and disadvantages of social media to student
performance. They often used a broad exploration but this research makes it unique because this
study tackles the specific performance of G12 students at Davao Doctors College Inc, and this
research will explore the cause of why they used social media for their academic performance.
For instance, how do students manage social media to use as a guide in increasing their academic
performance?
The researchers need to study this problem so that the students will be educated that the
over use of social media is not appropriate and can be harmful, apart from the social benefits of
social networking sites. It will ensure the importance of similar research for teachers, parents,
students and other researchers. This study would be useful and provide more information on the

This section contains review of research literature pertaining to the variables and indicators
considered in this study. These include the following: Social Media Influence (High social media
exposure, moderate social media exposure, low social media exposure) and academic
Social media is any digital tool that allows users to quickly create and share content
publicly. Social media surrounded by a wide range of websites and apps and etc. For example
Twitter that specialize in sharing links and short written messages. Other one is Instagram,
Facebook and TikTok that are built to optimize the sharing of photos and videos. People that
have internet access can sign up for their social media account. They can use that account to
share and get information whatever they choose to. The content they share reaches anyone who
Information and communication technology has changed rapidly with the emergence of social
media. The speed of change is accelerating. Just like the development of mobile technology has
an important part in shaping the impact of social media. Across the globe, mobile devices
conquer the total minutes spent online. This means at any time or anywhere, people connect and
Flow of the real world changes when society changes on how it is communicating.
According to Ross Quintana (n.d) influence can change minds. This becomes particularly
powerful when it turns into action. People are very chronic socially and if left alone, they can
There are many effects of social media in different people depending on their ages. In
terms of students, however, they are in their formative years. The influence of social media is
doubled by the fact that their peers surround them at school. Some are exactly affecting their
behavior such as cyber bullying, lack of focus, mental health issues etc.(Maslow,2019) there are
positives around social media sites, there are some negative effects also. The important thing
here is how teachers and parents are vigilant and limit how much time teens spend on internet
sites.
Rouse (2019) added that social media influence is a marketing term that makes people
think and persuade in the world of social online communities. The more a person is influenced,
the more appeal that individual has to companies. Some individuals want to promote an idea or
sell a product.
Internet Accessibility. There is no denying the fact that today’s world is largely
influenced and affected with the advancements in technology like the internet. People rely
mostly on what they do based on the information they get from accessing the World Wide Web.
Even in the field of learning, the internet has become an invaluable tool. According to Apuke
and Iyendo (2017), this kind of invention has reshaped the educational practices of improving
academic learning and will be more of use in enhancing scholastic exercises. In the Philippines,
about 40% of the nation’s public schools have the means of accessing the internet (Gultiano,
King, Orbeta & Gordoncillo, 2010). However, only 4% of these schools allow learners to use the
global computer network. Currently the Philippines has a modest 52% internet penetration rate.
The average connection speeds faster than 4Mbps. Increases in internet connectivity will
According to Kolan and Dzadza (2018). Social media is a useful servant but a risky one.
The study findings revealed master and a two edged sword. Despite those advantages. Students
could be able to exploit social media networks such as knowledge sharing, relationship building,
group conversation, addiction and attention diversion induced to some degree by the use of
social media that may have significant implications for students ' academic life. Social media's
one detrimental impact is piracy. The source of motivation to illegally download movies and TV
Under (Gurcan 2015). "Social media zips around our campuses" somewhere in the
literature. Social networks have dominated students in terms of using social media. Many
students use social networks such as Facebook, WeChat, WhatsApp and LinkedIn often. Using

Students get updates on class schedules, classes, receive and submit information from their peers,
This means using mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive
channels that distribute, co-develop, discuss and change user-generated content by individuals
and the community (Kietzmannn, 2012). Social networking is very much a term that is being
thrown around. It's a website that not only offers you information but also communicates with
you when supplying you with details. It is an internet based application community that allows
content created by the creation and exchange of users. Confusing social media with mainstream
news is easy, since we always refer to news representatives as the media. Adding to that, social

instead of for academic purposes. Moreover (Oye, 2012) said most students believe social media
According to Mensah & Nizam (2016), their research suggests that social media sites
have a substantial effect on the academic success of students in tertiary institutions in Malaysia.
Nonetheless, there is a higher validity amongst these six factors used in their study , time
suitability and health dependence Influence upon student academic performance . That's because
time management plays an important role in assessing an individual's success and failure. Thus
students lacking time control will easily fall victim to social media's negative impacts. In the
same way, wellbeing and addiction, students with social media accounts end up avoiding meals
Based on the research conducted by Stankov, Morony, and Lee (2014), students believe
they are capable of achieving an academic task if they believe they can perform it, they are far
more likely to continue and succeed challenges to prosperously fulfill the assignment. In
contrast, when students lack trust in their capacity to execute a job or solve a challenge, they are
more likely to give up and may even escape the task. Research shows that self-efficacy can
efficiently predict future academic performance of learners. Some studies demonstrate that this
structure has more predictive authority than non-cognitive abilities (Schunk & Pajares, 2009).
High-confidence students consider a wider range of jobs and are more likely to try and complete
higher education and difficult training programs. The excellent news is that self-efficacy can be
measured and learned as a malleable characteristic. Effective social and emotional learning
programming and evaluations can promote students’ self-efficacy that can enhance academic
The study by (Verduyn et al, 2015) found that subjects assigned to passively scroll through
Facebook (as opposed to those assigned to actively post and comment) thereafter reported a
lower level of well-being and more envy, indicating that not only Facebook greatly impacts the
mental health of an individual but also the way in which we engage with matters in Facebook.
This means that the longer one spends time on social media, the more they will be engaging in a
passive way.
A lot of studies performed about the positive and negative effects of social media on the
students' academic performances. According to Heffner (2016) , the use of social media can be a
good outlet to deal with academic frustrations, especially if the students are in contact with
another student that is having the same problem. Social media enables the students to get
connected with other students, which can be very useful because it allows them to discuss class
harassment, sexting, facebook depression, and privacy concerns as some of the challenges
associated with social networking. Teenagaers can cyberbully other teenagers online like sending
hurtful messages , abusive texts or posting his/her nasty videos or pictures. Cyberbully can cause

Theoretical Framework
Connectivism theory suggests that students are encouraged to seek out information on
their own online and express what they find. Connectivism suggests that the use of technology to
help individuals and information ought to improve the learning process not vice versa. These
opportunities are for people to learn and share information across the World Wide Web which
include Web browsers, email and social networks, Youtube, and any other tool which enables the
users to learn and share information with other people. (Goldie, 2016)

The Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior was created to explain why
behaviors that people can exert self control (LaMorte, 2018). There are six constructs in the
Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior: attitude, behavioral intention, subjective
norms, social norms, perceived power and perceived behavioral control. Only the first construct
is measured in this study which is analyzing the attitudes of adolescents toward different aspects
of social media that affect their overall well-being. If adolescents perceive positive outcomes on
well-being within certain social media platforms, the Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned
Behavior predicts that adolescents will be more likely to use those platforms. If negative
attitudes toward well being concepts exist within certain social media platforms, it is important
to understand why adolescents are using those platforms. The goal of this study is to analyze
adolescent attitudes toward the social media platforms in an effort to understand how each social

in Davao Doctors College, INC; if there will be influences of social media to their academic
performances. This study will show to them the result of exposing social media to the students.
Definition of Terms
Social media - is defined as a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological
and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-
generated content (Kaplan and Haenlein 2010). In this study social media became a reality for
E-learning - refers to the use of information and communication technologies to enable the
access to online learning / teaching resources. In its broadest sense, (Abbad et al 2009).defined e-
learning to mean any learning that is enabled electronically. They however narrowed this
definition all the way down to mean learning that's empowered by the use of digital technologies.
This study learning system is based on formalised teaching but with the assistance of electronic
resources is distinguished as e-learning. While teaching may be based in or out of the classroom,
the use of computers and the internet forms will be the major components of e-learning.

METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the methods used in this undertaking. This includes the following:
Research Design, Respondents, Data Gathering Tool, Data Gathering Procedure and Data
Analysis.
Research Design
This study used the Explanatory Sequential mixed-method under the mixed-method
research design. According to Aramo-Immonen (2013), the Mixed method research design is an
approach and integration of both qualitative and quantitative forms of research. It involves
collecting both qualitative and quantitative data. Mixed methods designs let researchers from
various research disciplines have a meticulous approach to answering the research questions.
Also, according to Doyle, Brady, and Bryne (2016), The explanatory sequential design consists
of a larger quantitative phase and followed by a qualitative phase. The goal of this design is to
back up and explain the quantitative results and data. The analysis and the collection occur
sequentially and the results of the quantitative stage guide the development of the qualitative
This research method is carried out to give value to present relationships, and a minimum
of two different groups are required to conduct this quantitative research method successfully.
This research is to examine the amount of time and how long they use social media. Hence, this
method has utilized the relationship between the social media influence and academic
performance of Grade 12 senior high school STEM students of Davao Doctors College. The
results for the quantitative phase of this study will be further explained by the qualitative phase.
Research Locale
The research will be conducted in Davao Doctors College,General Malvar St. ,Poblacion District
,Davao City ,Philippines. Davao Doctors College (DDC) is a private and non-sectarian academic
institution that was established in 1975 in Davao City, Philippines. Davao Doctors College
formerly known as the Davao Doctors Hospital School of Nursing (DDHSN), was the brainchild
of a group of medical doctors in response to the increasing demand for nurses in Davao Doctors
Hospital. The Davao Doctors College offers programs in the field of Health Science ,
now offering Senior High School (SHS) programs such as Academic and Technical Vocational
Livelihood tracks.
This section describes the respondents of quantitative and qualitative strand, and the samples

In this research, the Google Form Questionnaire collected the data. There are 10 item
statements and a total of 20 item statements in each indicator. This tool evaluated the influence
of social media on the academic performance of senior high school students in grade 12 at Davao
Doctors College, Inc. On a 4-point Likert Scale, the respondents react to each statement.
Quantitative Strand
There are two sets of questionnaires adapted from various authors and checked by
questionnaire construction experts. The median validity overall was measured and defined. The
modified questionnaires were true in content since they used Pearson Correlation Coefficient and
received a 0.65. In order to provide respondents with ease and comfort in answering each
question and understanding the purpose of the study, the questionnaire was structured in a very
detailed manner.

The interview questions were divided into two sections: activities and performance.
Questions focused on participant’s doing activities and contributing to the performance in social
media. The researcher/s selected 8 questions with open-ended questions. The questions solicited
the input of students who report that social media had a positive influence on their performance,
a negative influence, and those who didn’t mentioned that social media has no impact on their
academic performance.
Data Gathering Procedure
The following were the steps undertaken in gathering the data of study. The researchers
have sent a letter requesting the complete list of Grade 12 Senior High School Students under the
STEM strand to the Davao Doctor College Senior High School Department Faculty.
Another letter was sent to the Principal of Davao Doctors College, requesting permission
to conduct the study in all of the respective Grade 12 - STEM strand sections. The letter
authorizing the researchers to conduct the study was signed by the Principal.
