BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Computer Storage Device

A storage device is a piece of computer hardware used for saving,

carrying and pulling out data. It can keep and retain information short-
term or long-term. It can be a device inside or outside a computer or
server. Other terms for storage device are storage medium or storage
media.
A storage device is one of the basic elements of any computer
device. It almost saves all data and applications in a computer except for
hardware firmware. It comes in different shapes and sizes depending on
the needs and functionalities.;

Types of Storage Devices

Primary Storage Device - Also known as main memory. Main memory is directly
or indirectly connected to the central processing unit via memory bus. The CPU
continuously reads instructions stored there and executes them as required.

Memory Module - memory module or RAM

(random-access memory) stick is a printed
circuit board on which memory integrated
circuits are mounted. It holds volatile memory.
Volatile memory is the memory that can keep
the information only during the time it is
powered up. In other words, volatile memory
requires power to maintain the information.

3
BIOS - (/ˈbaɪɒs, -oʊs/, BY-oss, -ohss; an acronym for Basic
Input/Output System and also known as the System BIOS, ROM
BIOS or PC BIOS) is firmware used to perform hardware
initialization during the booting process (power-on startup), and
to provide runtime services for operating systems and programs.

Cache memory - is a chip-based

computer component that makes
retrieving data from the computer's
memory more efficient. It acts as a
temporary storage area that the
computer's processor can retrieve
data from easily.

Secondary Storage Device

Secondary storage device is not directly accessible by CPU. Computer

usually uses input/output channels to access secondary storage device
and transfer desired data using intermediate area in primary storage.
Usually has the largest storing capacity

Hard disk drive: HDDs are mechanical by

design and store data on magnetic and
metallic platters, which are read by read/write
heads. This makes this type of drive rather
erratic and prone to failure if used improperly.

Solid state drive: The newer SSDs store

data on flash memory chips and are less
prone to erratic behavior. These are much
faster and more reliable compared to HDDs.
This is the latest technology in storage
devices

Tertiary Storage Device

Typically, it involves a robotic mechanism which will mount (insert) and
dismount removable mass media into storage device. It is comprehensive
computer storage system that is usually very slow, so it usually used to
archive data that is not accessed frequently.
4
A magnetic tape coated strip of plastic on which data can be encoded.
Tapes for computer are similar to the tapes used to store music. Tape is
less expensive than other storage medium but commonly a much slower
solution that is commonly used for back up.

Optical Disc is any storage media

that holds content in digital format
and is read using laser assembly is
considered as optical media. The most
common type of optical discs are CD,
DVD, BD. CD has 700MBcapacity,
while DVD has 4.7GB and BD has
25GB.

USB flash drive is a data storage

device that includes flash memory with
an integrated USB interface. It is
typically removable, rewritable and
much smaller than an optical disc.

ACTIVITIES

A. Direction: Try a situation wherein you lack one or more of the output
devices in computer set. Share your experience to the class. Put your
experience into writings.

Situation 1: Try transferring file to other computer without USB Flash

disk drive or optical disc
Situation 2: Try removing memory module and start using computer

5
Remember

 Storage device is a piece of computer hardware used for saving,

carrying and pulling out data.
 There are three types of storage device (primary, secondary and
tertiary).
