Mathematics 10

Name: _________________________________ Score: _______________

Grade & Section: ______________________ Date: ________________

I. TRUE or FALSE. Write T when the statement is correct and F if the statement is
wrong. Write your answer on space provided.

_____ 1. The first step in dividing a polynomial using long division method is to
arrange the exponents of the variables in descending order.
_____ 2. The placeholder is used if there is/are missing terms in a given
polynomials.
_____ 3. The placeholder is always 1.
_____ 4. Always divide the first term of the dividend to the divisor.
_____ 5. In using a synthetic division, the sign of the divisor does not change
at all.
_____ 6. In dividing a polynomial using synthetic division, write the leading
coefficient or constant of the dividend on the bottom row.
_____ 7. The last constant or number to the synthetic division is always the
remainder.
−1
_____ 8. If a given divisor is 3x+1 it will become using synthetic division.
3
_____ 9. If the divisor in the synthetic division is a fraction, you need to
divide the answer to the denominator to get the final answer or the quotient in
dividing the given polynomials.
_____ 10. In the remainder theorem, you will always focus on the quotient and not
on the remainder.
_____ 11. Always change the sign or put the opposite sign for the divisor or
value of x in the remainder theorem.
_____ 12. Use synthetic division to divide the given polynomials to verify if the
remainder is correct or not.
_____ 13. The remainder when dividing x 4 +6 x 3 +3 x 2+6 x +2 by x ÷ 3 is -70.
_____ 14. Dividing x 3−4 x 2+ 8 x−4 by x−3 gives a remainder of 11.
_____ 15. Using a factor theorem, the polynomial 2 x3 −11 x 2−8 x+ 44 is a FACTOR of
x+2.
_____ 16. If P(c)=0, then x-c is a factor of P(x).
_____ 17. Greatest Common Factor and the Difference of Two Squares are some of
the skills used in factoring polynomials.
_____ 18. If you will factor a polynomial, always look for a common factor first.
_____ 19. Polynomials that cannot be factored are called prime.
_____ 20. In factoring polynomials, you can use either the long division method
or synthetic division.

II. MATCHING TYPE. Column A are the skills or method that can be used in
factoring polynomials while Column B are the illustration of Column A. Write on
the space provided the letter of the corresponding answer to each item. (2 points
each)

METHOD DESCRIPTION
_____ 1. Greatest Common Factor a. 3 3 2 2
a −b =( a−b)(a +ab+ b )
_____ 2. Difference of Squares b. 3 3 2
a + b =(a+ b)(a −ab+b )
2

_____ 3. Sum of Two Cubes c. 2 2

a −b =(a+ b)(a−b)
_____ 4. Grouping d. 4 3 2 2 3 2
2 a b +a b +5 a b =a b ¿
_____ 5. Difference of Two Cubes e. m(a+b) + n(a+b)=(a+b)(m+n)

III. Evaluate the following. (3 points each)

A. Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether the given binomial of the form
x-c is a factor of the given polynomial. Write the FACTOR or NOT FACTOR on
the space provided

___________ 1. P ( x )=x 3−7 x 2−6 x +71; x +3

___________ 2. P ( x )=2 x 3 + x 2−5 x +2; x +2

___________ 3. P ( x )=2 x 3 −3 x 2−32 x−15 ; x +3

B. Use the Remainder Theorem to find the remainder when each polynomial is
divided by the corresponding binomial. Verify your answer using synthetic
division. Encircle your answer or the remainder.

4. P ( x )=4 x 3 −2 x 2 +3 x−5 ; x−2

5. P ( x )=6 x 2−10 x+ 8; x −5

6. P ( x )=2 x 2−4 x +1 ; x +5
