PERIODIC TABLE

• Periodic table can be divided by into three parts:

(1) Representative elements:

s and p block elements except 18th group are called as
representative elements.

(2) Transition elements:

d-block elements except Zn, Cd and Hg(i.e. group 12) are
called as transition elements.
[d-block elements which have partially filled d subshells
either in their ground state or in their compounds].

(3) Inner-Transition elements:

All f-block elements are called as inner-transition
elements.
PERIODIC TABLE
(4) Typical/Bridging elements:
Third period elements(except Argon) are called as
typicalelements.
PERIODIC TABLE
Predicting period number, group number and block of an element
• Block of an element is the orbital in which last electron
lands in the electronic configuration according to aufbau
rule.
• Period number is the principal quantum number of the
outermost shell in the configuration.
• Every period starts with ‘ns’ and ends with ‘np’ subshell
where n is the period number.
• General electronic configuration of an elements:

• The elements after Uranium are called transuranic
elements. All transuranic elements are synthetic/artificial.

Question

Consider a hypothetical periodic table where 9th period exists.

In this period, find the number of elements if:
(i) Each orbital can occupy 2 electrons
(ii) Each orbital can occupy 3 electrons
PERIODIC TABLE
Question
Consider a hypothetical case in which value of azimuthal
quantum number is possible from l = 0 to (n+1). If a periodic
table is again made using this new rule, how many elements
are possible in second period
