Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

Academic motivation is a critical factor that influences the pursuit of academic

excellence. It is often often assumed that highly motivated students are more likely to

excel academically, as they are more focused, committed, and persistent in their

learning endeavors. On the other hand, students who lack motivation may struggle to

achieve their academic goals and accomplishment.

Different types of motivation have been shown to positively impact study

technique, academic performance, and adjustment in students in education areas.

They found high intrinsic motivation related to great study hours, deep learning

strategy, good academic performance, and low exhaustion from studying. Low

intrinsic high controlled and low intrinsic low controlled motivation was related to the

least desirable learning practice (Cureus 2023).

Interest in intrinsic motivation continues to develop as educational thinkers see

it as crucial in identifying factors contributing to students’ academic performance and

predicting their academic success (Asif, 2018). There has been a growing global

concern in the education sector to ensure students learn at school optimally and attain

academic excellence in their academic pursuits (Adamma et al. 2018).

Intrinsic motivation is believed to be the most powerful form of motivation,

according to Fabien (2015). If a student is intrinsically motivated to learn, things like

peer pressure, complacency, or indecisiveness are less likely to discourage them

(Fabien, 2015).
Research also shows that students are less intrinsically motivated to learn and less

likely to engage in critical thinking when rewards are attached to standardized test

results (Amrein & Berliner, as cited in Tybus, 2010).

Unlike intrinsic motivation; extrinsic motivation drives students to engage in

academic tasks for external reasons. Extrinsic motivators include parental

expectations, expectations of other trusted role models earning potential to enroll in a

course later and good grades. According to Bernabou and Tirole (2003), extrinsic

motivation promotes effort and performance with rewards serving as positive

reinforces for the desired behavior. The down side of it is that extrinsic motivators can

often distract students from true independent learning. Another problem with extrinsic

motivators is that they typically do not work over the long term. Once, the rewards are

removed, students lose their motivation (DeLong & Winter, 2002). As extrinsically

motivated, students tend to focus on earning higher grades and obtaining rewards.

Extrinsic motivation refers to the pursuit of rewards or outcomes that are

considered valuable by others, such as money, fame, praise, power, or social

recognition. Extrinsic motivation can come from external factors such as rewards,

competition, or penalties. In contrast, intrinsic motivation is driven by inherent

interest, enjoyment, or personal satisfaction. Although both intrinsic and extrinsic

motivation are important in education and academic success, extrinsic motivation can

be seen as more superficial or less motivating compared to intrinsic motivation. This

is because extrinsic motivation is based on external rewards or incentives, whereas

intrinsic motivation comes from within and is driven by a personal desire to achieve.

Research has shown that students who are intrinsically motivated tend to be more
successful academically, as they are more likely to persist and persevere even in the

face of setbacks or difficulties.

Scope and Delimitation

Capas National High School, as one of the school division of Tarlac Province

located in the municipality of Capas, offers a range of acadeemic program for students

of all backgrounds. Capas National High School provides opportunities to help

students reach their academic potential. To promote academic motivation, the school

provides students with the opportunity for personal growth and development, such as

activities that align with students’ interest.

This quantitative research aims to examine the link between academic

motivation and academic success among students at Capas Senior National High

School. By conducting this research, the researchers hope to gain new insights into

the role of academic motivation in shaping student achievement. The results of this

study will contribute to the existing literature on academic motivation and academic

success, and may inform future research and practice in education and psychology.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the link between Academic Motivation and
Academic Success at Capas Senior National School.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following question.

1.. How are the students’ profile describe in terms of;

1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Name

2. How may the learners describe motivation in terms of;

2.1 Personal interest in learning

2.2 The value of education or skills learned
2.3 Confidence in achieving academic goals -and
2.4 Strategies used to stay motivated?

3. How may the learners describe academic success in terms of;

3.1 Test scores

3.2 Graduating on time
3.3 Self-efficacy in learning -and
3.4 Resilience to failure?

4. How may the learners connect academic motivation and academic success?

5. What motivates the learners the most in their studies?

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to provide valuable academic motivation and academic

success. Academic performance is defined as a Student's ability to complete academic

assignments crucial in shaping a student’s future, reflecting not just their current

learning but also their long-term educational goals. Specifically, the study would

benefit the following groups of people:

1. School Administrator: The study would provide information in findings to

improve their practice in developing motivation among students and promoting

academic success.

2. Students: The study can potentially help students to understand the factors

that contribute to their academic motivation and academic success. They can use the

findings to develop strategies to increase their own motivation and performance in

their studies.

3. Policy makers: The study may help policy makers to understand the role of

academic motivation in promoting academic success, which can inform policies and

strategies related to education and workforce development.

4. Future Researchers: Future Researchers in the field of education, and

related disciplines can benefit from the study by using it as a reference point for future

research on the topic of academic motivation and academic success.

5. Families and communities: The study can potentially highlight the

importance of supporting academic motivation and academic success among students,

which can have implications for families and communities in promoting successful

academic outcomes.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This study aimed to understand the connection between Academic Motivation

and Academic Success to students of Capas Senior National High School during the

year OF 2024-2025. Specifically, the study described the demographic profile of the

respondents in terms of age, sex and name. Furthermore, the study described the types

of motivation and how it is connected to academic success.

The respondents of the study are limited to the students both male and female

at Capas National High School.

\Definition of Terms

The following terms used in the study were defined conceptually and /or

operationally to ensure clarity and better understanding of the context of this research:

Academic Motivation: refers to a child’s intrinsic or extrinsic drive to

engage, succeed, and excel in educational pursuits. It involves cultivating a passion

for learning, setting goals, and actively pursuing knowledge to enhance intellectual,

personal, and social growth (Motherly Growth, 2024)

Academic Success: refers to the achievement and performance of students in

their educational activities.

Intrinsic Motivation: the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfaction

rather than for some separable consequence.

Extrinsic Motivation: motivation to participate in an activity based on

meeting an external goal, garnering praise and approval, winning a competition, or

receiving an award or payment.
