LITERATURE REVIEW
Geology Museum is a public non-business unit under the General Department of
Geology and Minerals of Vietnam (hereinafter referred to as the General Department for
short), with the function of performing museum work, geological conservation, collecting,
storing, preserving, displaying, propagating and introducing geological and mineral artifacts
to serve the needs of scientific research, study, propaganda, education, sightseeing and
cultural enjoyment of the community. Geology Museum is a level III estimation unit, has
legal status, seal and own account, can open accounts at State Treasuries and banks in
accordance with law; head office in Hanoi city. (1) The Geology Museum is currently located
on the premises of the General Department of Geology and Minerals, at 6 Pham Ngu Lao
Street, Phan Chu Trinh Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.

Even though the museum contains a large number of rock and

mineral samples, few people visit it. The main reason is that museum
activities in the country are still quite traditional, old, lack updates,
presentation is not lively, and mainly static and monotonous displays.
Statistics show that more than 200 public and private museums in the
country are open, but the number of museums operating effectively is
very few. (2)

A point also worth noting is that the museum's lack of visitors also
comes from the limited professional knowledge of the working guides, only
interpreting topics in a stereotypical, mechanical manner... so no attract
viewers.

After visiting the museum, I noticed that most of the people who
visit the museum are students who come to do their homework, they are
also not very interested in the rocks and minerals on display in the
museum. In the next section, I will present some solutions to overcome
those problems.

DRAWBACKS AND SOLUTIONS

● Lighting
The museum's lighting system is not neat. As a museum of rocks and minerals, light is
an essential element for viewers to admire to the fullest. The museum's lights are still dark,
and some of them are broken.
I recommend fixing the lights and focusing on the museum's lighting.

● Display
Because there are so many different types of rocks and minerals, and the museum
presents them in an unorganized manner, touring becomes tedious and dull. The museum

should learn other ways of displaying other than the traditional way such as animation,
modeling, showing 3D illustrated films, motion displays...
I suggest the museum should categorize rocks and minerals by theme, such as color,
use, where to find them, or by rarity, and alphabet,... The museum also has a "dictionary of
rocks and minerals" so that visitors can easily look up and find the type of rock they want to
see.

● The visitor's understanding is still limited

Visitors with poor comprehension may find the museum to be tedious. I believe the
museum should have a reasonably priced guide to assist visitors in understanding the rocks
and minerals. On each floor of the museum, there should be someone on duty to answer
visitors' queries.

OTHERS
● Approach visitors
Currently, Feng Shui stones are gradually becoming very popular with young people.
Young people love to learn about stones and their uses. The museum can take this as a
premise to attract visitors, especially young people. The museum should be active on social
media, updating posts about certain rocks and minerals the museum has in interesting and
approachable ways (can learn from the Hoa Lo Prison's marketing team)
Museums must plan engaging activities, experiences, and appealing cultural events, and
produce a positive impact on visitors to attract visitors. Because visitors must not only see,
hear, and touch, but also must immerse themselves in the experience activities, creating
enthusiasm at the location. This is critical for many international visitors.
The museum should also host cultural exchanges between national and international
rock and mineral collectors on regularly and work with a variety of travel firms to feature
this site on tour itineraries.

● Business combined
Gemstone jewelry is very popular with all ages. However, there are many fake stones on
the field, causing confusion for users. As a museum of rocks and minerals, I think the
museum can become a reliable distributor of stones. The museum can open a jewelry store
to attract users to buy and visit the museum.

● Education combined
The museum can combine with educational institutions, organize for students studying
Sciences to visit and make reports on rocks and minerals.

CONCLUSION

Keeping up with a modern living, understanding visitor psychology, and arranging

events and activities that make museums a part of urban cultural life is both a requirement and
a problem. Many museums must modify their public approach because this space must not
only display and preserve cultural material, but also be a place to experience, share, and
organize events. It's also critical to shift museum makers' mindsets, creating new,
imaginative, and more appealing methods for people to actively come to the museum and
learn about rocks and minerals while having fun.
