Nike: Have they proven their sustainability efforts?

Introduction

As the world progresses, sustainability has become an increasingly important topic. From retail
to consumer electronic stores, every business is blue sky thinking, for their big break in
sustainability. However, as business sustainability increases, doubt towards these corporations
does as well. Nike is considered one of the most valuable brands in the world, selling over “780
million pairs of shoes each year” (FashionDiscounts, 41). Nevertheless, as Nike fights the
backlash from their forced labor laws as well as discriminatory advertising, uncertainty arises in
the truth towards their sustainability. So let us dive into what Nike as a company has done to
sustain the planet.

Is Nike a good corporate citizen?

Based solely on Nike’s efforts for a more sustainable fashion, they are meeting the criteria of a
corporate citizen. Nike has been working for thirty-two years to perfect their sustainable product
since they started their environmental journey in a very “public way in the early 1990s” (HBS,
6). Not only time spent, but money as well to ensure an eco-friendly substitute for commonly
used products. Some of these improved products include “organic and recycled cotton and
polyester” as well as adding “water reduction initiatives in its supply chain” (Good On You, 8).
Nike is also starting to look ahead, planning to eliminate all hazardous chemicals by 2025. With
new hopes in the future and an already clean record of accomplishment for sustainability, Nike is
a top competitor for prime corporate citizenship.

Five steps Nike has taken to improve the environment.

o “They swapped materials in high-volume products with low-carbon alternatives” (Dazed,

1).
o “Collaborated with independent factories and material suppliers to find better alternatives
for production methods and energy sourcing” (Dazed, 2).
o “Diverted roughly 1 billion plastic bottles from landfills to be recycled for greater
sustainable good” (Barlow, 7).
o “Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program recycled about 30 million pairs of shoes” (Justmeans, 3).
o “By creating a new synthetic leather, Nike was able to take the carbon footprint of a pair
of Air Force 1 sneakers and cut it in half” (Kalypso, 2).
