A very good evening to all of my dear classmates and mr

Sherman. I am the first speaker on behalf of my team

which will be proposing on the topic schools are not
equipping students with the skills to succeed in the
workplace. There are two main things that we do in life,
one is learning and the other is work .To work we need
to ensure we possess the right skills for it. Learning is the
main goal for students and if they don’t learn the right
skills and methods they wont be able to succeed in the
workplace. In schools we learn using textbooks, If we
solely depend on these textbooks to become successful
in the workplace, it will not work. The main reason for
that is they teach us about knowledge that they had
gained through experience , while this may be good but
it’s not something to depend on to make us successful.
What schools don’t teach you are real life skills that can
be applicable in the workplace and only stick to textbook
learning. I am talking about business studies , negotiation
, self-assesment etc . Schools don’t focus on the
important stuff instead they expect us to work with the
knowledge they had during their times. With the rapid
change in job industries its becoming harder and harder
to equip children with skills to be successful if relying on
the old teaching methods. Most schools teach maths ,
science , English , language 2 , social science or
commerce.the workplace requires practical skills ,
problem solving skills and soft skils . Most schools never
teach their students these important skills. Nearly three
quarters of young people ages 15 to 24 in 92 countries
with available data are off-track to acquire skills needed
for employment , according to a news report published
today by the education commission and Unicef , and
supported by generation unlimited ahead of world youth
skills day .

A study by Mitchell institute report says collaborating

with the industry and the community is vital to better
prepare the children and young people for future work
and life . Jobs in the digital age, and the skills and
capabilities required to do them are transforming at an
unprecedented rate . This is one of the major factors for
why school aren’t equipping school with enough skills to
help students succeed . Schools therefore need to make
sure children have exposure to the world of work .
Outdated teaching methods is a point that I would like to
bring to this debate . Many teachers like to think that
students will understand concepts and theories the way
they did therefore they use the same methods that were
used on them to help them understand concepts
however this may not always be true and can cause
students to not understand certain important concepts
which may be essential in workplace . Just because a
notion is popular doesn’t make it true . A recent review
of the scientific literature on learning styles found scant
evidence to clearly support the idea that outcomes are
best when instructional techniques align with individual
learnings styles . In fact there are several studies that
contradict this belief . It is clear that people have a strong
sense of their own learning preferences . Therefore
relying on old teaching techniques is a part of why
students aren’t being equipped with enough skills to
make them succeed in the workplace
