1.3. Problem statement

Most of the garages here in Ethiopia don’t use modern equipment and knowledge to repair cars.
We had an opportunity to see and work in different garage in Hawassa and Addias Abeba. From
our experience, their working style and materials that they have are the same. When the
mechanic starts to disassemble any parts of the car that had damage, they put all the different
bolts together. Mostly they place them
o On the ground
o Floor of the car
o Plastic container
o Metal container and
o covers
This makes the bolt mix with other bolts. Most of the time, bolts are lost, and the mechanic
wastes time finding the right bolt to screw the object that has been repaired back to its original
position. For the junior assistant mechanic, it is difficult and bothersome to find the right bolt
from the place where they were put and assembled.
Figure 11: mixed bolts and fasteners
