PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the introduction, review of

literature, theoretical and conceptual framework, statement

of the problem, scope and limitation, significance of the

study, scope, and limitation of the study and definition of

terms.

Introduction

Today, Practical Research is one of the main reasons

why senior high school students had been stressing out.

Because of this topic, some non-STEM students have had

difficulty performing their research papers. They find it

difficult since they don’t have enough time to do research;

finding RRL, create questionnaires, collecting data, making

tables (tally), and lastly, interpreting the results of

their study. However, we aim to conduct a study to assess

the level of the difficulties of non-STEM students in

Practical Research. For them to fulfill their research.

Surigao del Norte National High School 2
Senior High School, Surigao City

Our goal is to find effective techniques and strategies

to help them manage time and to have focus on this subject.

Non-STEM students encounter difficulties conducting

practical research, including obstacles with data

processing, defining a topic, interpretation and a lack of

understanding and awareness of practical research

techniques.

This study aims to assess what level of challenges non-

STEM students have when conducting actual research. To

ensure equity and access to learning for all students, we

will survey this population to learn more about the specific

obstacles that this population encounters and to develop

methods for improvement.

Practical Research guides students from problem

selection to completed research report with many concrete

examples and practical, how-to suggestions. Students come to

understand that research needs planning and design, and they

discover how they can effectively and professionally conduct

their own research projects. Essentially, this is a do-it-

yourself, understand-it-yourself manual Leedy, P. D., &

Surigao del Norte National High School 3
Senior High School, Surigao City

Ormrod, J. E. (2015). However, long-term outcomes in

critical care are extremely challenging, which is why many

research groups choose not to pursue them. To guarantee our

collaborative success in data integration and a better

knowledge of underlying processes of mortality and morbidity

seen in critical care survivorship, study investigators must

take the challenges of long-term follow-up into serious

account (Wilcox & Ely, 2019).

The researchers were driven by a desire to discover

fresh strategies that could instruct students on how to

effectively plan and conduct their own research projects.

Our priority is to assist students who have never conducted

research. This is due to the reality that not all seniors in

high school, or more specifically, non-STEM students, have

ever conducted research or had access to all specialist

research topics.

Second, to execute their own research in senior high

and to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving

abilities, it is crucial for students to understand how to

conduct research effectively. Thirdly, the goal of our study

Surigao del Norte National High School 4
Senior High School, Surigao City

is to assess the degree to which non-STEM students find it

difficult to identify the areas of research in which they

must struggle. By doing this, we may also be able to

identify the research strands in which non-STEM students

struggle the most. Finally, we are motivated by a genuine

concern for the students' needs because research is not a

choice but a necessity, with our goal of determining the

level of difficulties for non-STEM students.

The researcher is exploring the level of difficulties

of non-STEM to inform, help, or provide training in being

able to successfully understand the research process easily.

Research is the cornerstone of knowledge and innovation, as

acknowledged in our study. The senior high school "research-

infused" curriculum was implemented in the Philippine basic

education system to foster a research culture among students

and prepare them for college. It provides a means of

enhancing students' knowledge, gaining awareness of current

events, obtaining accurate information, and understanding

the effects of both internal and external factors.

Review of Literature

This section provides the concepts, writings, and

findings of experts which are relevant to the present study.

Cited literatures and studies are synthesized to point out

links, provide insights, and establish relationships between

and among variables under investigations.

Impacts of Practical Research among Senior High School

Students

According to Roxas 2020, research is important in many

spheres of life, not only in academia. Through research,

students gain analytical and critical thinking abilities as

well as powerful communication abilities, all of which are

essential in the global economy. In the end, research

provides the information base for innovation across a wide

range of fields. Also, a research study by Sumbawati and

Anistyasari (2018), finding an updated study topic for their

undergraduate thesis is a challenge for many individuals.

Because they are less accustomed to reading scientific

publications, students have less information about research

in each topic. Many medical schools now provide research

electives to encourage academic pursuits because it has been

Surigao del Norte National High School 6
Senior High School, Surigao City

demonstrated that research participation develops crucial

abilities for post-graduate success (Kan et. al, 2021).

Additionally, general education courses devoted to

research writing are challenging for most freshmen as they

demand the adoption of the rigorous thought processes,

methodologies, and technical language used by scientists in

their endeavors (Pilotti, M. A., & Elmoussa, O. 2022).

Everything we use now was developed through research, which

is the process of a person carefully studying a topic to

maintain and raise the standard of living. The researcher

must exercise caution when doing their research. They must

allocate enough time for each phase of the activity to be

finished. Because certain things are harder than predicted,

the researchers should allow more time—perhaps even days—

before the deadline.

Although doing research is laborious, teachers and

students are forced to do it because it is frequently

employed as a prerequisite for academic courses (Aleta et.

al, 2020). In the end, research provides the information

base for innovation across a wide range of fields. In a

Surigao del Norte National High School 7
Senior High School, Surigao City

perfect world, all research would be of the highest caliber

and significantly benefit society through enhancing health.

However, in the actual world, social impact and scientific

quality are not necessarily correlated.

For scientists, quality typically refers to uniqueness

of topic, idea, and methodology. A society might gain most

from research that is undertaken at a very high level and

evaluated in accordance with the standards inherent in

science, according to the prevalent assumption in science

policy until a few decades ago. The development from Mode 1

to Mode 2 is frequently used to describe the trend towards

audit science; whereas Mode 1 science was characterized by

the academic interests of a scientific community, Mode 2 is

more concerned with the collaboration between science and

other areas of society and with research that is relevant to

a specific application in society (Bornmann, L., 2014).

Challenges of Conducting Research

According to Roxas (2021) that research is important in

many spheres of life, not only in academia. The ability to

think critically and analytically, as well as to effectively

Surigao del Norte National High School 8
Senior High School, Surigao City

communicate, are all talents that students develop through

research and are essential in today's global society. The

knowledge that underpins innovation across a wide range of

fields is ultimately built through research. The Department

of Education (DepEd) promotes, in stills, and sustains a

research culture among elementary and secondary schools

nationwide through several projects (DepEd, 2017).

According to Lucas et al. (2021), the study topic has a

reputation for being demanding and challenging because

producing a research result requires a significant

investment of time and energy. There have been a few reviews

that have discussed the difficulties of conducting research

on seniors or in facilities that provide long-term care.

While some of these didn't necessarily be conducted in LTC

settings, some of them focused on older individuals as

research subjects. For instance, topics related to

intervention research in LTC, schools, and critical care

were covered. Potential changes to how seniors are recruited

for research were suggested (Lam et. al, 2018).

Surigao del Norte National High School 9
Senior High School, Surigao City

However, conducting a literature review offers

excellent opportunities for psychology and social science

students to make use of the body of prior research findings

and to do so in a manner that is like the strategies used to

plan and carry out primary research. By its very nature,

research is a difficult endeavor that calls for in-depth

topic knowledge, careful preparation, and hard work.

According to certain studies, one of the challenges for

novice researchers performing research projects is their

lack of understanding of the research process (Akyürek &

Afacan, 2018; Rahman et al., 2014). It explained that

beginners may face challenges in conducting research

projects due to their inadequate knowledge of the research

process. Conducting research can be challenging for non-STEM

students due to various factors such as funding, lack of

training in research methods, and limited opportunities.

Level of Student Comprehension on Complex Articles

The goal of reading comprehension is to locate

straightforward information, skim fast, perform well in

academic and professional contexts, integrate reading

Surigao del Norte National High School10
Senior High School, Surigao City

knowledge, write about texts, and offer criticism. (Sari et.

al,2020). Lack of reading ability eventually eliminates

opportunities for professional success and fulfillment.

Reading is one of the most challenging topics in the school

system, despite its importance. Especially in research, when

it comes to finding related literature, analyzing data, and

developing conclusions. If pupils don't make the most of the

readings they are given, they won't have to develop their

analytical or critical reading skills. The underlying notion

is that our goal when reading is to attempt to discern the

author's intentions (Küçükoğlu, H.,2013).

The analysis of the questionnaire and interview data,

the researcher discovered that most students struggle with

reading comprehension because they lack motivation to

develop a habit of reading, reading little to nothing. The

ability of the kids to comprehend a reading text is thought

to be problematic. (Estika Satriani 2018).

Anwar., (2023), claims that studies have long

acknowledged the importance of reading comprehension and how

it relates to, predicts, and improves other abilities in

Surigao del Norte National High School11
Senior High School, Surigao City

terms of raising students' Indicated that reading

comprehension is not a skill that can be learned and then

used in a variety of reading situations. Understanding is

one of the most difficult acts that readers regularly engage

in, and it requires a variety of knowledge and abilities.

Despite a widespread misconception regarding understanding,

numerous lines of research have long highlighted the

intricacy of reading comprehension. Depending on what they

are reading and why, one person may have different levels of

understanding ability. (Catts Huge W, 2022).

Conceptual Framework of the Study

This study will be anchored to the study of Escalona

and Fiscal (2020), which aims to identify the challenges

faced by senior high school STEM students when conducting

research. The researchers based their study on the theory of

challenge and support, which suggests that balancing these

two factors is crucial for the personal development and

growth of students.

The study's first box introduces the Respondents'

Profile, which includes several significant demographic

Surigao del Norte National High School12
Senior High School, Surigao City

details. It begins by exploring the topic of "Sex," which

enables us to comprehend the gender distribution among the

study's participants and sheds light on the representation

of both male and female respondents. By examining the

respondents' variety of ages, the study's second section,

"Age," sheds light on the generational background. About the

study's focus, this information provides a glimpse into the

typical participant age range.

Last but not least, the research looks into the

"Strand" that respondent selected, which may have included

tracks like Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM),

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), or other specialist

tracks. This information contributes to a thorough

comprehension of the participants' profiles within the

context of the study by providing insightful information

about the academic pursuits and paths of the participants.

The second box states that the study's "process" part

is a comprehensive examination of the challenges faced by

non-STEM students conducting practical research in senior

high school. contained within the "Process" section. It

Surigao del Norte National High School13
Senior High School, Surigao City

examines seven key dimensions of difficulty. First,

“Defining a topic or Problem, "Making a topic is something

to read and obtain information about, whereas a problem is

something to be solved or framed as a question. Second, it

evaluated "Finding Background Information about the Topic,

"gathering background information looking for facts that

should indicates the root of the problem. Third, “Planning a

Research Design and Sample”. It is a strategy or method you

use on how your research properly work and sample is a

population that you want to use. Fourth, “Data Gathering”

when the data is already gathered it must be factual and

it's proven so that the researcher can have information.

Fifth, “Presenting, Analyzing, and Interpreting Data”. Data

presentation involves presenting the data concisely,

analyzing data a process of analyzing data to make a

meaningful insight, data interpretation involves making

insights and creating conclusion.

Sixth, “Formulating Insights” when the data is properly

present, analyzed it helps you to come up with new

realization and crate you to new insights. Seven, “Defining

Surigao del Norte National High School14
Senior High School, Surigao City

a New Problem” research is cyclical it starts with the

problem and ends with a problem in able for the other

researcher to formulate a new problem. These seven steps

help to analyze the data from conclusion.

Lastly, the third box in the study serves as the

program of for the non-STEM students in conducting research.

It takes 5 days to help students conduct research in a

structured and systematic way and contribute to the existing

body of knowledge in their field of study. Day 1 involves

orientation for all non-STEM students. Day 2 involves

identify a research question or problem and Finding

background information about the topic. Day 3 involves

planning a research design and sample and interpreting data

and Data gathering. Day 4 involves presenting, analyzing,

and interpreting data and formulating new insights. Lastly

day 5 which involves defining a new problem. This program

aims to provide non-STEM students with a practical research

experience and develop critical thinking, problem-solving,

and communication skills that are valuable in their future

careers.
