CH- 8- Cell the Unit of Life- (Assignment)MS

I. MCQs
1. Observe the diagram of the fluid mosaic model of plasma membrane and match the
labels A, B and C with the components I to IV mentioned below.

I. Lipid layer
II. Sugar
III. Peripheral protein
IV. Integral protein
V. Cholesterol

(a) A-V, B-III, C-II, D-IV

(b) A-II, B-IV, C-III, D-I
(c) A-II, B-III, C-IV, D-V
(d) A-V, B-IV, C-III, D-II

Ans- (b)
2. The cell organelle which lacks a membrane boundary
(a) Chloroplast (b) Golgi body
(c) ribosome (d) mitochondria

(c) ribosome

3. The structure present between the cell walls of two adjacent cell.
(a) Stroma lamella (b) middle lamella
(c) microsome (d) mesoglea

(b) middle lamella

II. In the following question a statement of assertion followed by a statement of reason
is given. Choose the correct answer out of the following choices given below.
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of the assertion.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
(c) A is true, but R is false.
(d) A is false, but R is true.

1. Assertion- The enzymes present in lysosomes are called hydrolases.

Reason- lysosomes are called the ‘suicidal bags’ of the cell.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
2. Assertion- It is said that the content of nucleolus is continuous with the rest of the
nucleoplasm.
Reason- There is no membrane boundary for the nucleolus.
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of the assertion.

III. Answer the following Questions

1. Who proposed the cell theory? State two salient features of this theory.
Cell theory was proposed by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann. Rudolf
Virchow (1855) explained that new cells are formed from pre-existing cells
(Omnis cellula-e cellula).
Postulates of Cell theory
(i) all living organisms are composed of cells and products of cells.
(ii) all cells arise from pre-existing cells.

2. Is extra genomic DNA present in prokaryotes and eukaryotes? If yes indicate their
location in both the types of organisms.
Extra genomic DNA is present in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In
prokaryotes it is the plasmid. In eukaryotes it is present in organelles like
mitochondria and plastids.

3. Cell wall is a non-living rigid structure that forms an outer covering for the plasma
membrane in some protist, fungi and plants. It protects the cell from mechanical
injuries and helps in cell to cell interaction.
(a) Name the three layers in the cell wall of a mature plant cell.
(b) Mention any three components of cell wall of algae.

(a)Primary wall , secondary wall and middle lamella.

(b) Algae have cell wall, made of cellulose, galactans, mannans and minerals like
calcium carbonate, while in other plants it consists of cellulose, hemicellulose,
pectins and proteins.

4. The following diagram deals with endomembrane system of eukaryotic cell.

Match the set of labels with the numbered label on the figure below.

Ans-

5. Leucoplasts are colourless plastids. Name and mention the storage products of the
different types of leucoplasts.
The leucoplasts are the colourless plastids of varied shapes and sizes with stored
nutrients: Amyloplasts store carbohydrates (starch), e.g., potato; elaioplasts
store oils and fats whereas the aleuroplasts store proteins.

6. Comment on cartwheel structure of a centriole.

Centrosome is an organelle usually containing two cylindrical structures called
centrioles. Both the centrioles in a centrosome lie perpendicular to each other in
which each has an organisation like the cartwheel. They are made up of nine
evenly spaced peripheral fibrils of tubulin protein. Each of the peripheral fibril
is a triplet. The adjacent triplets are also linked. The central part of the proximal
region of the centriole is also proteinaceous and called the hub, which is
connected with tubules of the peripheral triplets by radial spokes made of
protein.
