At the beginning of the semester, everyone was requested to complete a needs analysis
questionnaire to assess their own English level and think about what they needed to improve
or learn. From my self-evaluation, my writing skills are worse. I am not good at thinking of
interesting ideas and clearly expressing my ideas to the readers. After learning from
GE1401, my weakness improved greatly.
Regarding essay writing, the teacher gave me the Graphic Organiser, which instructed me
on how to write an essay outline. I need to think about the topic sentence for each paragraph
to keep my mind clear. Then, I need to find literature that can support each paragraph's
argument. However, all this only needs to be recorded in short sentences rather than
complete paragraphs because the outline is more about how to write a complete and
organised paper later. This gave me a lot of inspiration. Because in the past, I always wrote
whatever I thought. As a result, sometimes the link in the middle of the paragraph is
insufficient, and it is even easy to deviate from the topic. Now, I should list the outline of the
paper before I start writing the complete paragraph. Help me ensure that all arguments are
related to the central arguments and that the arguments are consistent and natural.
Also, the feedback from the peer and teacher helped me a lot. They pointed out some of my
deficiencies. For example, some of my sentences will confuse the readers, the discussion is
not detailed enough, or the format of the citation is wrong. These comments all let me know
my shortcomings and the opportunity to correct them before the official deadline for the final
draft. Therefore, I know the importance of getting feedback from others, and I can also rely
on this method to write better essays when taking other courses in the future.
The other objective that I achieved in this course is knowing how to be a good academic
writer in English. From the course materials and Online Module, I am familiar with the
structure and organisation of different academic genres (such as research papers, literature
reviews, and messages). I should also maintain an academic tone when writing academic
papers, such as using some formal words, not phrases. More importantly, in the library
workshop, I learned how to search the literature related to the paper correctly and effectively.
It can help me save time and learn more about relevant topics. Literature support is essential
for every essay paper, so it enables me to become a good academic writer.
Besides, From the group project "Intrographic", I am responsible for finding data for the
theme of "Cyberbullying". From the workshop, I learned that the Statista website provides a
lot of data for me to prepare the information I need for the information chart. In the discussion
on the infographic design, because the topic was more serious, we finally finalised red as the
theme colour. Actually, I do not have too many art designs tells. In the process of group
work, I realised the importance of team members. The strengths of different team members
can make the whole project more perfect. Therefore, this has improved my cooperation
ability and speech skills.
The future development goal of academic writers. The most important thing is to expand my
vocabulary. Rewriting in academic papers is necessary and often used. Reusing the same
word frequently in the paper is not the right choice. Therefore, choosing effective vocabulary
to re-express the same concept is very important. It is sometimes a challenge for me. I need
to use a dictionary or synonym website frequently. Later, I will read more English books or
news, such as the South China Morning Post. When I encounter words I don't know, I can
write them down. After a long period of contact, I can be better at using different English
words and speed up my writing.
In conclusion, I have gained a lot of useful English writing skills in the GE1401. I will also use
them well when writing essays later and have more confidence in myself. Make sure that my
essay is academic, but not an article without literature support and no detailed explanation.
Through continuous practice, I hope that writing an essay can become easy for me.
