The balanced equation for the electrolysis of water of is 2H2O → 2H2+ O2.
43. How many Faradays of charge will be required to produce 16 g of oxygen gas? [O = 16]

ANSWER: 2 moles of water require 4F, giving one mole of oxygen gas
16g of oxygen gas = 0.5 mole
0.5 mole O2≡ 2F charge

44. How many Faradays of charge are required to produce 0.6g of hydrogen gas? [H = 1.0]

ANSWER: 0.6g H2 = 0.3 mole H2

But 1 mole H2≡ 2F of charge
Hence 0.3 mole H2≡0.6 F of charge

45. In one such electrolysis 4.48 dm3 of oxygen gas were produced at STP. How many
Faradays of charge were passed through the electrolytic cell? [Molar volume of gas =
22.4 dm3].

ANSWER: 4.48 dm3 of O2 = 4.48/22.4 mole of O2 = 0.2 mole

But 1 mole O2 = 4F of charge
Therefore 0.2 mole O2 = 0.8F

PROBLEM OF THE DAY

A dominant allele B confers black colour fur on certain breeds of dogs. If a

dog is homozygous recessive (bb), it has white fur. Ernest would like to know
whether his pet dog which has black colour is homozygous dominant (BB) or
heterozygous (Bb). How might he determine the pet’s genotype?

SOLUTION:

Ernest could use a test cross to find if his pet’s genotype is either BB or Bb. He should allow his

black dog to mate with a white dog (ie genotype bb). If any F1 offspring is white then the pet’s

genotype is Bb. If the two parents are allowed to mate repeatedly, and all the offspring’s of the

mating are black then there is a high possibility that his pet is BB. The greater the number of

offspring, the more confident Ernest can be of his conclusion.
