Many children have music classes when they attend school. And it is thought that music can
help them learn other subjects better. Research has shown that it can improve children’s
performances in certain subjects. Some studies have shown that music training can help you
understand your own language better. It could also help you with learning a second one.
Moreover, young people who have studied music also seem to get higher scores in other
subjects like maths. So it could be that these school subjects are connected in some way. Music
also helps you think of new ideas, and believe more in yourself. If you are learning the guitar,
for example, it can be really exciting when you are able to start composing your own pieces of
music. One of the biggest benefits, of course, is that listening to music can reduce your stress.

In the 1960s, it took pop and rock groups one or two days to record their songs. Nowadays, it
can take months and months. Many rock groups begin by recording only one instrument, for
7
example, the voice. Then they record other instruments- electric piano, synthesizer, guitars,
drums and so on.
Next, they might use a computer to add special effects. Finally, they ‘mix’ all the instruments
until they get the sound that they want. This means that a CD or cassette will always sound very
different from a live concert.
Music engineers have developed a new computer programme that will change the future of
music. A computer can analyse a singer’s voice. Then if you give the computer the lyrics and
music of a song, the computer can ‘sing’ it in that voice. This means that a singer only needs to
record one song and the computer can then sing other songs in the singer’s own voice. Singers
can sing new songs many years after they have died.
Most of us listen to music for pleasure, but for the record companies, music is a product, the
same as soap powder. When a record company finds a new group (or ‘band’), they first try to
develop the band’s ‘profile’. They will try to create an ‘image’ for the band that they think will
attract young people. Instead of allowing the band’s full artistic freedom, they will often tell the
band what they should wear, what they should say and how they should sing and play.
In recent year, many rock groups have started their own record companies because they say
that the big companies are too commercial.
Since the 19th century, companies have looked for better and cleaner ways of creating
electricity. One UK company has created a special type of floor made of square tiles. Under
each square, there is a system that can create electricity very cheaply when someone steps on
it!
The design of the floor works very well when it is used in very busy areas. And the reason is
8
that a lot of energy is created simply because of the large numbers of people walking across the
floor.
The floor can have other uses too; one of them is to record how many people visit a
shopping centre. This kind of inionnation is very useful for shop owners because very often they
want to know at which times of day they have the highest numbers of customers, so the next
time you visit shopping centre, have a careful look at the floor that you are walking across!
New York is called "the Big Apple". Maybe it is not exactly like an apple, it's certainly
very big. There are too many people, that's the problem. The streets are always full of cars and
trucks; you can never find a place to park. the questions.
Travelling around is never easy in the city. If you have enough money, you can take a

A few drive slowly, but most go very vary fast. Cab driving is a difficult job. It can be
dangerous, too. Thieves often try to steal the drivers' money. Drivers sometimes get hurt.
If you don't want to take a taxi, you can go by bus or you can take the subway. The
subway is quick and it's cheap, but parts of it are old and dirty. Lights don't always work and
there are often fires on the track. On some subway lines, there are new, clean, silver trains. But
