Lesson 3: Aspects of Verb (Progressive Tenses)

Aspects of verbs
1. Simple 2. Perfect 3. Progressive 4. Perfect Progressive

3. PROGRESSIVE TENSES – indicates unfinished action


A. Past Progressive – describes an on going action in the past
Form: was/were + progressive verb (ing-verb)
Example:
I was watching TV when mom came home.
The dogs were barking when we passed by at that area.

Time Expressions:
At that moment, While, Earlier today, All day yesterday, Last night at 8 pm
When (used to show an action interrupted by another action in the past)

Example:
1. While I was watching TV, the phone rang.
2. At that moment, they were waiting for the bus.

A. Present Progressive – describes an activity that is currently in progress.


Form: is/are/am + progressive verb (ing-verb)
Example:
Father is fixing the wall.
The teams are giving all they got to win the game.

Time Expressions:
Now, At the moment, Currently, Right now, Today, This week/month/year

Example:
1. I am currently working on my project.
2. They are watching a movie right now.

C. Future Progressive – describes an on-going action in the future.


Form: will be + progressive verb (ing-verb)
Example:
They will be celebrating their victory after class.
. She will be entering a prestigious school in college.

Time Expressions:
Later, today, By this time, tomorrow, Soon, Next week/month/year, At this time,
In the future

Example:
1. By this time tomorrow, I will be traveling to New York.
2. Next week, we will be meeting with our new team.

Example:
Present Progressive:
1. Samuel is eating his lunch.
2. I am playing a guitar in my room.
3. The children are eating in the school canteen.

Past Progressive:
1. Samuel was eating his lunch.
2. I was playing a guitar in my room.
3. The children were eating in the school canteen.

Future Progressive:
1. Samuel will be eating his lunch.
2. I will be playing a guitar in my room.
3. The children will be eating in the school canteen.
