VERBS

Tense and Time


1.Past tense (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect
continuous)
2. Present tense (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect
continuous)
3.Future tense (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect
continuous)
PAST TENSE
Simple past
• To express actions that took place at some time in the past and are over
now
example
1.I posted the letters yesterday.
2.We stayed at Kanpur for two weeks.
• To denote past habits.
example
1.We usually went to the school by bus.
2. She never worked at night.
Past continuous tense
• To express an action which was in progress at some point of time in
the past. Very often simple past and past continuous are used
together, they suggest that one activity was continuing when
another took place.
Example:
1.Nitin was sleeping when the telephone bell rang.
2.The boys were making a noise when he entered the class.
 Past perfect tense
• To express an action completed before a given past moment
Example
1.I had finished my work by 6 o’ clock.
2.The train had left the station before we reached the station.

 Past perfect continuous tense


• To express an action which began before a definite moment in the past, had
continued up to that moment and was still in progress at that moment or
had very recently finished.
example
1.I was very tired when I met you because I had been mowing my lawn for two
hours.
 PRESENT TENSE
Simple present tense
• To express actions done as a matter of habit or actions done
repeatedly.
example:
1.Monkeys eat bananas. (habit)
2. He goes for long walk. (repeated action)
• To express scientific facts and permanent truths
Example:
1.A magnet attracts iron.
2. Yoga exercises keep us fit.
• To express natural qualities and professional activities.
example:
1.Honey tastes sweet.
2. A chemist sells medicines.

 Present continuous tense


• To express an action taking place at the time of speaking
Example:
1. You are learning.
2. A Few of you are dreaming.
• to express an action about to take place in the near future.
example:
1.I am meeting him tomorrow.
2. We are playing a friendly match next week.
• Note
• Verbs not used in the present continuous tense
1. Verbs of senses: hear , see, smell , taste
ex:
Quinine tastes bitter. (not is tasting)
I hear that you have resigned your job. ( not am hearing)

2. Verbs of feeling and emotions : feel, want, desire, like, dislike,


fear, love, hate, care, wish, respect, appreciate.
ex:
I want a new pen .( not am wanting)
He hates dishonest people.(not is hating)

3. Verbs showing possession: belong, own, possess


ex: This house belongs to me.(not is belonging)
 Present perfect continuous tense
• To express an action that began in the past and has gone on till the time of
speaking.
ex:
1. Rashmi has been playing chess since 2 o’ clock.
2. Anil has been talking to his friends for 1 hour.

FUTURE TENSE
 Simple future
• To express an action about the future in a general way
ex:
1. The government will soon be able to control inflation.
2. Heavy monsoon will affect rail traffic.
• Asking somebody to do something
ex:
1. Will you please lower the volume of your stereo?

 Future continuous tense


• To express an action that will be in progress at a given moment in the future
ex:
1. I shall be taking my dinner at 9.30 p.m.
• To express an action that is fairly certain to happen in the future.
ex:
1. She will be changing her school next month.
 Future perfect tense
• To express an action completed before a given moment in the future
ex:
1. They will have declared the results by next Monday.
2. All these flowers will have withered in two days time.

 Future perfect continuous tense


• To express an action which will begin before a definite moment in the
future, will continue up to that moment and will be in progress even at
that moment.
ex:
1. I shall have been riding a bicycle for two hours.
2. The labourers will have been digging a well for six days.
