PRESENT TENSE
PRESENT TENSE
Examples
1. I come to school with my mother everyday. (Habitual/ Repeated)
2. The sun rises in the east. (Eternal Truth)
3. The water boils at 100 Celsius. (General fact/ Truth)
4. The train to Kandy leaves at 7.00am. (Future planned action)
5. My mother lives in Kurunegala. (Permanent situation)
6. He gets a goal. (Sports commentaries)
PAST TENSE
Examples;
1. The police stopped me on my way home last night. (An action that has
already taken place)
2. Ann passed her examination because she studied very hard. (an action
already finished/ completed )
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
USES
• It is used for something that is happening at or around the time of speaking. The action is
not finished.
Examples;
1. The students are listening to the teacher.
2. The selected children are going to the stewards’ meeting on the 18th November. (Future
planned action)
3. Apoorvi is reading Pride and Prejudice. (She has started it last week and is still reading)
The following verbs are not normally used in continuous tense
Like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, realize, suppose, mean,
understand, believe, remember, belong, contain, consist, depend,
seem, see, hear, smell, taste etc.
PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
USES
* It is used to say that somebody was in the middle of doing something
at a certain time.
Examples
1. Ranuga was watching TV last evening around 7.30pm
2. The science teachers were teaching yesterday around 10.30am
(They started teaching at 9.45 and finished teaching at 10.45)
PRESENT PERFECT
USES
* It is used to talk about a period of time that continues from the past
until now.
Examples
1. Have you ever been to China?
No, I have (I’ve) never been to China
2. Peter has lost his key. (He hasn’t found it yet.)
3. We have not (haven’t) had much problems in “Teams” so far.
PAST PERFECT
USES
* It is used to describe an action that took place in the past before another
past action.
Examples
1. The house was dirty. They had not (hadn’t) cleaned it for weeks.
2. When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home.
3. Navodi had taken a bath before she went to bed.
PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE
USES
* It is used to describe the duration of an action that began in the past and continues
into the present. (used for an activity that has recently stopped or just stopped.)
* It is used for actions repeated over a period of time.
Examples
1. It has been raining for two hours.
2. What have you been doing since we last met?
3. Shemara has been writing letters all day
4. Isitha has been playing violin since he was eight.
PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE
USES
* It is used to say that something had been happening for a period of time
before something else happened.
Examples
1. At last the bus came. I had been waiting for twenty minutes.
2. He was out of breath. He had been running.
3. Ben was tired when he arrived home. He had been working hard all day.
