Q:1 In an ideal transformer, number of turns in primary and secondary are 200 and
1000 respectively. If the power input to the primary is 10 kW at 200 V, calculate (i)
output voltage (ii) primary current. Ans:1000V ,50 V
Q:2The primary of a transformer has 200 turns and secondary has 1000 turns. The
power output from secondary at 1000 V is 9 kW. Calculate primary voltage and heat
loss in primary. Take resistance of primary coil 0.2Ω and efficiency of transformer =
90%. Ans. 200 V; 500 W
Q:3 A transformer has 200 primary turns and 150 secondary turns. If the operating
voltage for the load connected to the secondary is measured to be 300 V, what is the
voltage supplied to the primary ? Ans. 400 V
Q:4 The output voltage of an ideal transformer, connected to a 240 V a.c. mains is 24
V. When this transformer is used to light a bulb with rating 24 V, 24 W, calculate the
current in the primary coil of the circuit. Ans. 0.1A
Q:5 Calculate the current drawn by the primary of a transformer which steps down 200
V to 20 V to operate a device of resistance 20 ohm. Assume the efficiency of
transformer to be 80%. Ans:0.125A
Q:6 A 50 µF capacitor, 0.05 H inductor and 48 Ω resistor are connected in series with
an a.c. source of e.m.f. E310 sin 314t. Calculate reactance of the circuit. What is its
nature ? What is phase angle between current and applied e.m.f.?
[Ans. 48 Ω, capacitative; 45°, current leads]
Q:7 A 25 µF capacitor, a 0.10 henry inductor and a 25 ohm resistor are connected in
series with an a.c. source whose e.m.f. is given by E = 310 sin 314t.
(i) what is the frequency of the e.m.f. ?
(ii) calculate(a) the reactance of the circuit(b) the impedance of the circuit, and(c)
current in the circuit. [Ans. (i) 50 Hz (ii) (a) 95-84 Ω (b) 99.1 Ω(c) 2.21 A]
Q:8 A 40 ohm resistor, 3 mH inductor and 2 µF capacitor are connected in series to a
110 V, 5000 Hz a.c. source. Calculate the value of current in the circuit. [Ans. 1.25 A]
Q:9The core of a transformer is made of a material having narrow hysteresis loop.
Why?
Q:10. The core of a transformer is made of magnetic material of high permeability.
Why?
Q:11The number of turns in the secondary coil of a transformer is 20 times that in
primary. What value of power will be obtained in secondary, if power fed to primary is
100 watt ?
Q:12 When a current flows in the coil of a transformer, then why does its core become
hot ?
Q:13.(a) A transformer is used to step down a.с. voltage. What appliance do you use to
step down d.c. voltage ?
(b)What is the self inductance of a coil, in which magnetic flux of 40 milliweber is
produced when 2A current flows through it . Ans:(2x10-2)
Q:14. An inductor of 5 H inductance carries a steady current of 2 A. How can a 50 V
self induced e.m.f. be made to appear in the inductor?
[Ans. In 0-2 s, current is reduced to zero]
Q:15. The current in a solenoid of 240 turns, having a length of 12 cm and radius of 2
cm, changes at the rate of 0-8 A/s Find the emf induced in it. (Ans. 6x 10-4V)
Q:16. Magnetic flux of 5 microweber is linked with a coil when a current of 1 mA flows
through it. What is self inductance of the coil? [Ans. 5 mH]
Q:17. The self inductance of an inductance coil having 100 turns is 20 mH. Calculate
the magnetic flux through the cross section of the coil corresponding to a current of 4
milliampere. Also, find the total flux. [Ans. 8 x10-5 Wb; 8 x 10-3 Wb]
Q:19. What is the magnetic flux turn of a solenoid of self inductance 8x10- 5 H when a
current of 3.0 A flows through it? Assume that the solenoid has 1000 turns and is
wound from wire of diameter 1.0 mm. What is the cross sectional area of the solenoid?

Q:20. Over a solenoid of 50 cm length and 2 cm radius having 500 turns, is wound
another wire of 50 turns near the centre. Calculate mutual inductance of the two coils.
If current in primary changes from 0 to 5 A in 0.02 s, what is the emf induced in
secondary coil ? [Ans. 7.896 x 10- 5 H ; 19.74 mV]
Q:21. Why is induced emf called back e.m.f.?
Q:22. The inductance of a coil is 0.25 H. Calculate its inductive reactance in a.c. of
frequency 50 Hz.
Q:23. How does the mutual inductance of a pair of coils change when
(i) distance between the coils is increased
(ii) an iron sheet is placed between the two coils ?
Q:24.Can one have an inductance without a resistance? How about a resistance with
an inductance?
Q:25. A coil is wound on an iron core and looped back on itself so that the core has
two sets of closely wound wires in series carrying current in opposite senses. How is its
self inductance affected ?
Q:26. An a.c. generator consists of a coil of 100 turns and cross sectional area of 3 m²,
rotating at a constant angular speed of 60 rad/sec in a uniform magnetic field of 0-04 T.
the resistance of the coil is 500 Ω. Calculate (i) maximum current drawn from the
generator and (ii) max. power dissipation in the coil. [Ans. 1-44 A; 518-4 W]
Q:27. An a.c. generator consists of a coil of 2000 turns each of area 80 cm² and
rotating at an angular speed of 200 rpm in a uniform magnetic field of 4.8X10-2 T.
Calculate the peak and rms values of e.m.f. induced in the coil. [Ans. 16-1 V, 11-4 V]
Q:28. A flat coil of 500 turns each of area 50cm2 rotates in a uniform magnetic field of
0.14 Wb/m² at an angular speed of 150 rad/sec. The coil has a resistance of 5Ω. The
induced e.m.f. is applied to an external resistance of 10 ohm. Calculate the peak
current through the resistance. [Ans. 3.5 A]
