Week 1 Reflection
Week 1 Reflection
thoughts and questions about the information (or process) that we will address
this semester? The purpose of this assignment is to help you think through the
introductory classes and look forward to the semester ahead. Be prepared to
introduce your ideas and beliefs about well-being -- hopefully we will be able to
address them!!
REFERENCE: Reference should relate to the readings from the Intro classes.
I’m not really sure if I’m understanding the prompt but I’ll try to answer it as best I
can. I don’t really have any questions about the information but I guess I’ll just
talk about what I took away from the readings and what I agree with and my
thoughts. I know in the lectures we talked about PERMA and the differences
between short term dopamine releases like those from drugs vs long term
coming from activities and things that make you feel happy. The reading by
Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi also touched on these concepts and I think one
of the things in that which stuck out to me was the concept of flow. I thought this
was really interesting and unique because I never really thought about how
different things might be if we completely immersed ourselves in whatever activity
we were doing. I think especially now that is really hard to do, since we are
surrounded by technology and distractions basically everywhere, and now that I
think about it the only time I think I am ever truly immersed in something in my
day to day routine is when I go to the gym. I think that moving forward I’m gonna
try to keep this in mind and try to immerse myself in other things as well and see
how that changes my wellbeing. I think the rest of the main points that were
made in the reading were things I agree with and have had somewhat of an idea
of, such as authentic happiness vs chasing superficial happiness and having
positive institutions foster wellbeing. Something else that really surprised me in
the readings was in the article by professor schlecter and others where it started
off by giving statistics about current college students in the US. I was really
surprised to see 45.2% of college students have reported being “too depressed
to function on campus” and I think that I can definitely relate to some of these
statistics about feeling overwhelmed and very sad. I didn’t realize how
widespread this was and how many people really felt this way in college, and I
guess this made me realize that the way the world is moving, these numbers are
only going to get worse unless we actively try to focus on improving our mental
health and wellbeing. Having programs and assistance in school is really
important, but I think there is only so much that can really do, and it is hard for
people to pull themselves out of a slump even if there are these things to help
them. If we can preach healthy ways to stay happy not just in classes like SOH,
but everywhere so all students are able to really think about it and try to act on it,
I think that can help. Moving forward in SOH, I’m really looking forward to
learning more about healthy ways to stay happy and hear others thoughts on
wellbeing that can help influence mine and help me improve my own. This first
week helped me start to understand the basics, and I hope to learn more as we
continue the semester.
