Teachers,

A few years ago I taught third grade and sent my students home with a journal
every week that encouraged parents to write back and respond in the same
notebook. There was a tremendous response as it meant so much to parents to
be able share their experiences and feelings through writing to their children who
are now learning how to write as well! I modified the journal a bit to include the
opportunity for the use of 6+1 Trait Writing through weekly prompts to parents.

Getting started:

There are many ways to implement this journal into your weekly writing activities
in the classroom and fit the needs of your students.

During one of our weekly 30 mintue writing sessions, I gave my students a writing
prompt that initiated a response from their parents. Students answered the
prompt in their journal and I sent it home every Thursday with their homework
packet so parents were expecting the journal to come home. I asked that it was
returned on Wednesday. This gave those busy parents the weekend to sit down
with their child and respond. Enjoy those responses, some can be tearjerkers!

Example prompt: This week we visited the South Slough National Estuarine
Research Reserve. Write a letter to your parents explaining what you saw,
touched, and heard while you were there. Also, inlcude one of your favorite
experiences that day.

Let me know if you have any questions! If you need a different grade level or
anything modified I will do my best to help!
