Vacation in Taiwan
24 hours on Yang Ming Mountain
Yang Ming Mountain is a mountain outside the city of Taipei in Taiwan. Most visitors say
their visit to the mountain is the best part of their trip to Taiwan. Yang Ming Mountain is
actually a volcano. The volcano is not active now, but you may experience an
earthquake during your visit, because Taiwan is in an active earthquake zone. North
Taiwan has a warm climate, but in the winter it can be really cold, so you might need to
bring warm clothes with you. Between June and September, you might experience a
typhoon.
Morning
In the morning, we will meet at the Yang Ming Visitors’ Center, and there will be guides
to answer your questions about the mountain and its history. In spring, the mountain is
covered in flowers and you can see cherry blossoms. In summer, you might see the
famous chestnut tiger butterflies
Afternoon
There are many walking trails on the mountain. You may want to take the JinBao Li
History tour, where you will see beautiful bridges and temples. There are also many
Buddhist monasteries and temples, so you will probably see some Buddhist monks on
your walk.
Evening
In the evening there are two options. We might visit a hot spring so you can relax in
the naturally heated hot water, or we might go to one of the many restaurants on the
mountain and try some of the local food and look at the wonderful night views of Taipei
City.
You might experience an earthquake during your trip to Yang Ming Mountain.

do the maneuver correctly, the object blocking the airway will come out. Be careful,
though, don’t do it too hard – you might break the person’s ribs.
The second technique is “The Backslap”. This technique works if the person who is
choking is sitting or standing. First, you need to get behind them and, if you can, get
them to lean forward a little. Then, hit them with your forearm directly between the
shoulders. Be careful that you don’t hit them on the neck, hit them just between the
shoulders toward the middle of the back. If the object which is blocking the airway
doesn’t come out, try the backslap again.
You can practice on your friends – carefully. You never know. You might save
someone’s life one day!

Filipe: Yeah.
Sonia: Oh, I don’t like black and white movies.
Filipe: Why not? Sometimes they’re a lot more exciting than modern ones. They might
not have as many special effects as modern ones, but the atmosphere is a lot more
interesting. The director is Alfred Hitchcock.
Sonia: Who’s he?
Filipe: Oh, he was one of the greatest directors in Hollywood, but he was actually
British.
Sonia: Oh, I see. So why is it such a good movie?
Filipe: Oh, it’s terrifying, but it has a simple plot. It stars Janet Leigh. She plays a
woman who stays in a motel and gets murdered in the shower by a crazy guy.
Sonia: Umm. That doesn’t sound so scary.
Felipe: Well, it is. It’s very scary. After you see the movie, taking a shower will never
be the same again.
Sonia: Oh right, haha.
Felipe: So what about your favorite scary movie?
Sonia: Ummm. Let me think a minute. Oh, I know. Have you seen Arachnophobia?
Filipe: Umm. No. I don’t think I have.
Sonia: It’s a horror movie about spiders.
Filipe: Oh! Sonia: But actually it’s a kind of comedy as well.
Filipe: A horror comedy?
Sonia: Yeah.
Filipe: So does it scare you or make you laugh?
Sonia: Well, it’s not as scary as some horror movies, but I’m afraid of spiders, so the
movie is a lot more scary for me than funny.
Filipe: I see.
Sonia: Yeah, It takes place in South America and California, and it stars John
Goodman.
Filipe: Oh I like him. So what’s it about?
Sonia: It’s about a new kind of killer spider which starts killing people in this small
town. John Goodman plays the role of an exterminator, you know, a person who kills

MAKING PERFECT PRESENTATIONS
Chapter 6
HOW TO DEAL WITH NERVES
There are many ways to help you deal with your nerves. You will need to find the way
that’s best for you. From our experience, here are some of the best methods to calm
yourself during a presentation.
12
Tip 1:
Practice. If you practice a lot before your presentation, you will as nervous because you
will be prepared and you will feel more confident. Practice as much as possible. And
don’t forget to practice with the equipment.
Tip 2:
Before you begin the presentation, check the equipment carefully. Do this before the
audience arrives in the room. Is the microphone working? Turn on the projector. Get
your slides ready. If you know that all the equipment is working well before you begin,
this will make you feel more confident.
Tip 3:
During your presentation, don’t forget to breathe normally. A common mistake is for
people to take big breaths. This will make you more nervous. Another mistake is not to
breathe enough. Breathe normally and while you are breathing, try to imagine a
peaceful scene. This will help you to relax.
Tip 4:
Smile. Smiling has a positive effect on you and on your audience.Smiling makes you
feel better and more relaxed. You will find the audience smiling back at you if you smile
at them.
Tip 5:
Walk around. If you feel very nervous, walk around the room while you are talking. This
will help you with your breathing, and it will help you to relax your muscles. Also, when
the presenter moves around, it gives the audience something else to look at. Staying in
one place all the time might make you feel anxious.
Tip 6:
Interact with the audience. This means that you should talk to them and let them talk
to you. Let them ask you questions if they want to. This doesn’t mean they don’t like
your presentation. It means that they find you easy to listen to.
Finally, remember that a presentation is a group event for speaker and audience
together. This presentation is not only yours. It is also theirs. It is not a competition.
If you follow these tips, you will be less nervous.
