1) Find the maximum rate of change of f at the given point and direction in which it occurs
a) 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) =x2 + xy + y2 , Po (-1 ,1)

3) Suppose you are climbing a hill whose slope is given by the equation z = 1000 – 0.005x2-
0.01y2 where x y and z are measured in meters and you are standing at the point with the co-
ordinates (60, 40, 966). The positive x- axis points east and positive y – axis points north
a) If you walk due south, will you start to ascend or descent? At what rate?
b) If you walk northwest, will you start to ascend or descent? At what rate?
c) In what direction is the slope largest? What is the rate of ascent in that direction? At what
angle above the horizontal does the path in that direction begin?

4) Find the equation of the largest plane at the point Po on the given curve
a) x2 +y2 + z2 = z, Po (1,1,1)
b) x2 - 4y2 +3z2 + 4 =0, Po (3,2,1)

5) Find the linearization L(x, y) of the function of each given point


a) 𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = x2 +y2 +1 at (0,0) and (1,1)
b) 𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = x3 y4 at (1,1)
c) 𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = e2y – x at (0,0) and (1,2)

6) Show that the ellipsoid 3x2 + 2y2 + z2 = 9 and the sphere x2 +y2 + z2 – 8x -6y -8z +24 =0 are
tangent to each other at the point (1, 1, 2).

7) Find all local maxima and local minima and saddle points of the following functions
a) 𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦)=x2 + xy +y2+y
b) 𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = y(ex – 1 )
c) 𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = √56𝑥 2 − 8𝑦 2 − 16𝑥 − 31 +1 -8x

9) Find the shortest distance from the point (2,0,-3) to the plane x + y+ z =1

10) Find the points on the cone z2 = x2 + y2 that are closest to the point (4, 2, 0).

11) A carboard box without a lid is to have a volume of 32,000 cm3 find the dimension that
minimize the amount of cardboard used?

12) Solve the following problem using Lagrange multipliers.


a) Find the points on the ellipse x2 + 2y2 =1 where 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥𝑦 has its extreme values
b) Find the points on the curve xy2 = 54 nearest to origin.
c) The temperature at a point (x, y) on a metal plate is T(x, y) = 4x2 - 4xy + y2. An ant on the
plate walks around a circle of radius 5 centered at the origin. What are the highest and
lowest temperatures encountered by the ant?
d) Find the maximum and minimum value of
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = x – 2y + 5z on the sphere x2 + y2 + z2 = 30.
e) Find the largest product the positive numbers x, y and z can have if x + y + z2 = 16.
f) The plane x + y + 2z = 2 intersects the paraboloid z = x2 + y2 in an ellipse. Find the points
on this ellipse that are nearest to and farthest from the origin.
