MODAL VERBS
ABILITY (can – could – be able to)
1. can = ability in the present
Eg:I can play the guitar.
2. could = ability in the past; go with verbs: see, hear, smell, taste, feel, understand, guess and remember.
Eg: I could play the guitar when I was 7 years old.
She listened carefully and she could hear people talking in the next room.
3. is/am/are able to = ability in the present
Eg: I am able to play the guitar.
Was/were able to = ability to do st in particular situation in the past.
Eg: Although it was dark, he was able to find his way.
Will be able to = ability in the future
Eg: When you graduate, you will be able to get a job.
OBLIGATION/ DUTY/ NECESSITY (must – have to – should/ought to – need)
1. must = it is your duty/you are obliged to do sth (past form: had to)
e.g. You must listen to your teacher.
2. have to = it is necessary to do sth (past form: had to)
e g. We have to be at the airport at 9 o'clock.
3. Have got to = have to; it is used in everyday speech.
e g. I've got to phone Mum tonight.'
4. should/ought (less emphatic than must) Should and ought to express duty.
e.g. People should take/ ought to take better care of the environment.
5. need = It is necessary to
e g. Need I talk to the boss right away?
ABSENCE OF NECESSITY (needn’t/ don’t have to/ don’t need to – didn’t need to – needn’t have done)
1. needn’t/don’t have to/don't need to + present infinitive (present or future) = it isn't necessary to do sth
eg. You needn't/don't have to/don't need to work tonight. (It isn 't necessary for you to work tonight)
2. didn’t need to/didn't have to = it was not necessary to do sth
This structure suggests that an action did not happen in the past because we knew then that it was not necessary.
e g. She didn't need to/didn't have to take a taxi. (It wasn't necessary, so she didn’t.)
3. needn't + bare perfect infinitive = it was not necessary to do sth, but it was done
This structure shows that an action happened in the past, even though it was not necessary.
eg. You needn't have bought any bread. I'd already bought some. (It wasn't necessary, but you did.)
PROHIBITION (mustn’t – can’t)
mustn’t/can't = It Is forbidden to do sth
you are not allowed to do sth
it is against the rules/law to do sth
e.g. You mustn't/can't drive over 35 mph. (= It's against the law. You are not allowed to drive over 35 mph.)
