ANSWER QUESTION ONE [COMPULSORY] AND ANY OTHER TWO
QUESTIONS
==========================================================
QUESTION ONE [20 MARKS]
The company producing two types of boxes had developed a LPP model to
determine the quantities of each type to be produced so as to maximize the
profit

The modal :
Maximize Z=30 x1 +20 x 2
Subject 2 x1 + x 2≤100
x 1 + x 2 ≤80
x 1≤40
x 1 , x2 ≥0
(a) If x 1 and x 2 are the number of the boxes produced, use simplex method
to find optimal product mix. What is the optimal value of Z? [10
marks]
(b) If the right hand side value of the first inequality is subjected to change,
compute the feasible range. [5 marks]
(c) Explain the following terms in LPP.
(i) Duality
(ii) Sensitivity analysis [5 marks]

QUESTION TWO [20 MARKS]

A fertilizer company has three factories A, B and C with annual production
capacities of 600, 900 and 500 tones respectively. The fertilizer is transported
and stored in two warehoused W1 and W2 with capacities of 800 and 1200
tonnes respectively. The transportation cost for each destination is shown in the
table below. (cost per tone).

W1 W2
A $14 $11
B $9 #12
C $9 $10

(a) Find the transportation schedule that will minimize the cost by using
north west corner point. [10 marks]
(b) What is the minimum cost that can be used to transport the fertilizer ?
[4 marks]
(c) Explain the term ‘degeneracy’ within the context of transportation
modeling [6 marks]

QUESTION THREE [20 MARKS]

Build - Rite has estimated the times necessary to complete each of the tasks
involved in building a house. The activity list, immediate predecessors and
expected completion time for each activity are given in the following table:

Activity A B C D E F G H I J
Immediate B - A C A D H A F,G,J H,E
Predecessor
Expected 5 3 2 3 4 8 5 2 2 3
time (days)

(a) Draw an activity on node (AON) network for this project [4 marks]
(b) For each activity compute the earliest start time, earliest finish time
[4 marks]
(c) For each activity compute the latest start time an latest finish time
[4 marks]
(d) For each activity compute the slack time. [2 marks]
(e) Identify the critical path. [2 marks]
(f) Give one advantage lf knowing the slack time of an activity. [2 marks]
(g) What is the project completion time? [2 marks]

QUESTION FOUR [20 MARKS]

(a) Discuss basic considerations involved I determining inventory policy that
must be reflected I the mathematical inventory model. [8 marks]
(b) A construction company demand for cement per year is 2000 tonnes. The
cost of placing the order is about Tzs 250 000/= each time an order is
placed. Annual holding cost is about 20% of purchasing cost per tone.

(i) how much should the company order at one time given that it
purchases cement at Tzs 600 000/= per tone.
(ii) What is the cycle time?
Assume the company wants to minimize inventory cost [8 marks]
(c) What are the assumptions of the eoq MODEL? [4 marks]

QUESTION FIVE [20 MARKS]

(a) Use Djikstra’s algorithm to find the shortest path in the following
network of roads from point 0 to T

[10 marks]
(b) Discuss two uses of such shortest path problems given in (a) [5 marks]
(c) What is project crashing? [5 marks]

QUESTION SIX [20 MARKS]

(a) Distinguish between integer programming and linear programming
[5 marks]
(b) A building contractor has four cranes located in four different places
and wants to assign them to four different construction sites. The
distances in kilometers between the locations are shown in the table
below.

Construction site
Cranes 1 2 3 4
A 90 75 75 80
B 35 85 55 65
C 125 95 90 105
B 45 110 95 115

Find the assignment of the cranes which minimizes distance travelled which
implies minimal cost. [15 marks]
