PHYSICS
Time 2:30 Hours July, 2024
INSTRUCTIONS
1, This paper consists sections A, B and C with the total of eleven (11) questions
,Answer all questions in both section A and B and only two questions in Section
C
2, Section A carries Sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty four (54) marks and section
C Carries thirty (30) marks.
3, Non-programmable calculator may be used.
4, Speed and accuracy are very important tools for this examination.

6. Where necessary the following constants may be used:Density of water = 1000 kg/m3 or 1
g/cm3,Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10N/kg,Density of mercury =13.6gcm-3 , Standard

1, For each of the items (i) - (x), choose the correct answer among the given alternatives and

(b) A certain machine used to lift a container weighing 100,000N. the radius of effort
piston is 20cm and the radius of load piston is 5m. if the efficiency of the machine is 99%,
calculate the velocity ratio and its mechanical advantage (05 marks)
5 (a) Explain three application of the law of inertia in our daily life (03 marks)
(b) A uniform metre rule of about 120g and 130cm is pivoted at 80cm from one end,
what mass must hung to the end of of the ruler to keep the system in rotational balance? (06

6 Suppose you are asked by your teacher to prepare electrical components and instruments
for an experiment to determine the relationship between voltage and current
(a), Give five electrical components that can be used in this experiments (03 marks)
(b), Draw a simple electric circuit which will be suitable for that experiments (03 marks)
(c), From the simple electric circuit drawn above how will you connect the electrical
devices used for measuring the current and the potential difference (03 marks)
7 (a) Suppose bird is on the tree at a certain height above the ground and a boy at rest
threw a stone to hit the bird on the tree. If the bird falls and strikes the ground with a
velocity of 80m/s.
(i) What was the height of the bird from the ground? (2.5 marks)
(ii) Calculate the time taken by the bird to reach the ground. (2.5 marks)
(b) A physics teacher was driving on a rough road. The right front tyre of the car ran
over a sharp object and got punctured. The teacher used a screw jack with a handle of
length 40cm and a pitch of 0.5cm to lift the car whose mass 330kg. if the efficiency of the
screw jack is 45%, calculate the amount of force applied at the end of the handle when
lifting the car (04 marks)
8 (a) A convex mirror is often used as the wing mirror of a car instead of plane mirror.
Justify this statement by giving one point (03 marks)

(b) A camera is used to take a close up picture of an object 3cm tall. If the object is
positioned 24cm in front of the lens and a focused image is formed on the film 12cm
behind the lens, determine the focal length of the camera lens and the height of the image
formed on the film (06 marks

9.(a) A car travelling due north at 60km/hr. it turns and travels due east at 80km/hr. find
magnitude and direction of the resultant velocity of the car (04 marks)
(b) A weight of 20N rest on a plane inclined at 400 to the horizontal. What are the
components of the weight parallel and perpendicular to the plane?(06 marks)
(c) A horizontal force of 15N is applied to a 5kg box placed on a horizontal table. Will the
box move if the coefficient of friction is 0.4?(05 marks)
10 (a) By using kinetic theory of matter explain why solid expand when heated? (04 marks)
(b) A brick 30cm x 18cm x 10cm is at 20℃. If the brick is heated to a temperature of
150℃, what will be its new dimensions? (The coefficient of linear expansion of concrete is
1.2 x 10-5 K-1) (06 marks)
(c) An iron plate 20℃ has a hole of radius 8.92mm in the centre. An iron rivert with a
radius of 8.95mm at 20℃ is to be inserted into the hole. To what temperature must the plate
be heated for the rivert to fit into the hole? (linear expansivity of iron is i.62 x 10-5K-1) (05
marks)
11(a) A metal sphere of unknown composition has a mass of 0.4kg. the sphere is heated in a
furnace to a temperature of 150℃ and then dropped into an insulated cup holding 0.35kg of
water at 20℃ upon reaching thermal equilibrium the temperature of the system is measured
to be 32℃
(i) Calculate the specific heat capacity of the metal (04 marks)
(ii) Use the values of specific heat capacity identified above to identify the metal (02
marks)
(b) Suppose you are assigned to to design a thermos flask. Explain how you will minimize
heat by conduction, convection and radiation (06 marks)
(c) In the hot regions it is advised that the outer walls of houses should be painted white,
explain (03 marks)
