Tutorials n°1
Exercise n°1
a) What is the resolution of a 10 bits digital sensor for a span of 16 mA?
b) A pressure sensor gives a span of [25 psi, 150 psi], specify the error that measures 103 psi, if the
accuracy is of: (1) ±1.5% Span, (2) ±2% FSD, (3) ±1.3% reading?
c) What is the accuracy of the pressure measurement instrument if its transfer function is of 27 mV/kPa
±2.1% (FSD) and the transmitter precision is of ±1.7% (FSD)? Give the pressure accuracy range of
231 mV ?

Exercise n°2
A vessel of 150 inches requires an interface measurement; it includes two fluids with specific gravities of 1.0
and 1.08, see fig. I.1. Determine the interface of a mixture of fluids if the transmitter output is 18.4 mA?

Fig. I.1 Interface Level Measurement.

Exercise n°3
The resistive elements of strain gauge are of 6kΩ, see fig. I.2, a digital voltmeter of 0.1V, 1V, and 10V of
calibration with a resolution of ±0.1% FSD is used to measure the output voltage. Let us consider 𝑅1 fixed and
𝑅2 is the measuring element. For a supply of 10V, what is the minimum variation of 𝑅2 which could be
detected?

𝑅1 , 𝑅2 , 𝑅3 and 𝑅4 are resistances into a bridge circuit, they are strain gauge elements of 6 kΩ each one, see fig.
I.3. A digital voltmeter with 0.1V, 1V and 10V of calibration and a resolution of ±0.1% FSD is used to measure
the voltage output. Using a supply of 10V, what is the minimum variation of 𝑅2 which could be detected?

Exercise n°5
To measure the level of Kerosene and Gasoline in a tank, with a temperature of 20°C, a capacitive probe has
been used (C2), see fig. I.4. Let us consider that C2 is put into an AC bridge circuit as shown in fig. I.5. Give the
level (d) by knowing that: Ca = 10 nF (capacitance without liquid); r = 10 m (length of capacitive plates); under
bridge balance, R1 = 15kΩ, R2 = 27kΩ, R3 = 18kΩ, and C1 = 27Nf?
Table I.1 gives the Dielectric constants of certain liquids.
Table I.1. Dielectric constants of certain liquids
Water 80 @ 20°C Acetone 20.7 @ 25°C
Water 88 @ 0°C Alcohol (ethyl) 24.7 @ 25°C
Glycerol 42.5@25°C Gasoline 2.0 @ 20°C
Glycerol 47.2@0°C Kerosene 1.8 @ 20°C

Exercise n°6
A strain gauge with a gauge factor (GF) of 4.3 is connected to an Aluminum section, see fig. I.6. If the gauge
has an initial resistance of 1.2 kΩ and it is placed in a bridge circuit with resistors of 1.2 kΩ. What is the voltage
variation to be detected by the voltmeter if the supply is 10V?
Knowing that the force (F) exerted is 6.5 kN on an aluminum radius of 35 cm (d) from its fixed end, the radius
has a cross-section (A) of 8 cm2, and the coefficient of elasticity (E) of aluminum is 6.89∙1010 N/m2. While,

∆𝑥 = ; ∆𝑅 = .

Exercise n°8
