Managing The Sport Enterprise

A History of Change in Sport

Throughout history, there have been a number of political, social, and economic

movements that have played an important role in bringing positive changes to the world of

sports. A lot of these positive movements we've seen in history have broken down barriers,

challenged discriminatory practices, provided greater opportunities for athletes of all genders and

races, and elevated the overall quality of the sports world. The sports realm is highly sought after

and looked up to, there are millions of fans around the world who watch sports, so it's important

that sports organizations lead by example in a positive manner.

An example of a political movement that has changed the world, and the world of sports

would be the Civil Rights movement. This movement specifically fought against racial

segregation and discrimination, not only within society but within sports as well. African-

American Athletes Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali played important roles in breaking

down barriers and paving the way for equality in sports. The courage and determination of these

two athletes sparked a wave of change within the sports industry. This movement was crucial in

the sports realm and changed the way people looked at sports forever.

Another significant movement that had a positive impact on the social movement of

sports was the Women's Liberation Movement. Dating back to the early ages of sports, women

faced numerous challenges, discrimination, and restrictions in sports participation. The Women's

Liberation Movement fought for opportunities and recognition for female athletes, ultimately

leading to the establishment of women's sports leagues and increased funding for women's sports
programs. The article History, Women's Rights, Title IX: For Discrimination-Free Education

goes into depth about how the Title IX law was a very important part of this transition that fought

against the unjustified discrimination against women in the American educational system and

required male and female athletes to have equality in the sports realm.

Economic Movements have also played a crucial role in shaping the world of sports. One

example would be the rise of corporate sponsorships and endorsements. Corporations recognized

the value of associating their brand with successful athletes and sporting events. This has led to

the creation of jobs for people within sports and brand organizations, and not only provided

financial stability for athletes but also elevated the overall quality and popularity of sporting

events.

The Women's Liberal Movement and Feminist Movement was a very important recent

change within the sports world. The article A History of Women in Sport Prior to Title IX,

submitted by Richard Bell, describes the early age of college sports and how it is largely

unrecognized by historians because competitions were seen as physical activity and were

between students rather than institutions. There are and were stereotypes that were created in

society to encourage women to not participate in sports because they were considered to be

masculine. Women are also highly sexualized in the sports industry rather than being seen for

their true athletic ability. Thanks to the implementation of Title IX, a strong institutional change

has taken place. A lot of these untrue stereotypes resulted in women's sports being taken less

seriously. Because of Title IX, women's sports benefitted from greater access to team sports and

resources.

In conclusion, political movements advocating for social justice and equality have

brought about positive changes in sports that won't be forgotten. The examples listed above have
all contributed to equality, inclusivity, and professional growth in sports. These movements have

broken down barriers, challenged discriminatory practices, and provided greater opportunities for

the average person and athletes. As we continue to learn from these historical examples, it's

important to recognize the power of collective action and the role sports can play in promoting

positive social change.
