URBANIZATION
• Mumbai, a city of over 20 million people, has grown exponentially, outpacing its infrastructure.
• Initial settlement in the 19th century focused on docks and a fort, a layout that has been stretched
to its limits.
Population growth from 1900 to 2020:
• 1900: 1 million
• 1940: 1.8 million
• 1960: 4 million
• 2020: Over 20 million
POPULATION GROWTH AND
CHALLENGES

• The city's population grew from 1 million in 1900 to over 20 million today.
• The financial center and textile mills create significant traffic flows.
• Daily commutes averaging 2-4 hours.
• Managing environmental issues like waste disposal, air and water pollution.
• Increasing unemployment and crime.
HOUSING CRISIS

• Over 4.5 million illegal squatters live in

overcrowded slums or on pavements.
• The rich preempt desirable urban land,
leading to a severe mismatch between
housing supply and demand.
• Lack of safe shelter.
• Many live in substandard conditions
with limited access to basic amenities.
PROPOSAL FOR NEW GROWTH CENTERS

• Transforming Bombay's linear structure

into a circular, polycentric model.
• Concept of 'New Bombay'
• CIDCO (City and Industrial
Development Corporation) established
for design and development.
• Diverts office jobs, increases housing
capacity, and improves infrastructure
efficiency.
