Electrical Engineering
Review
What is Atom?
-The smallest portion into which an element can be subdivided
without losing its physical and chemical properties
-The nucleus contains protons (+) and neutrons; electrons
(-) are distributed in the shells of the atom
Units of Charge
• Elementary charge unit (ECU) – the amount of electrical
charge on a single electron
Current(I)= charge(q)/time(s)
where: I = current in ampere, A
q = charge in coulomb, C
t = time in second, s
-Measured in amperes (A)
-One ampere is equal to one coulomb per second.
Electromotive force (emf) and Potential Difference
Electrical Resistance
Electrical Resistance
Sample Problem
- A piece of copper wire has a cross section area of 2.0 mm2 and a
length of 5 meters. What is the electrical resistance at 20°C? What
will be the resistance of the wire in example 1 at 75°C?
Fundamental Laws
1. Ohms Law
Sample Problem
1. A 40-W electric lamp draws a current of 0.25 ampere at 120 volts. What is
the resistance of the lamp?
