When exploring marine environments, underwater robots tend to be

abull trout in a china shop, disturbing marine life with their bulk and disruptive
propulsion. Enter SoFi, the soft, agile robotic fish with a delicate demeanour.
Scientists said on Wednesday they have created a remote-controlled robot
that swims quietly through coral reefs and schools of fsh and uses a físheye
lens- of course -to capture high-resolution photos and video with a camera
built into its noSe.

INTENSIVE GAT NNUn×ongqu 176

Dubbed SoFi. it can swim forward, move up and down, turn and
Change speeds, propelling itself by wiggling its tail side to side like a real
nsh, a motion created by pumping water with asmall motor into two balloon
like tail chambers. SoFi, built with a generic fish design, is white, weighs less
than 4 pounds (1.6 ka) and is about 18 inches (47 cm) long. SoFi's "soft
artifcialmuscle" tail is made of silicone elastomer, a type of rubber. Its nose
houses the electronic elements. It has two side ins for manoeuvring. "The
name is mellifluous just like the way the robot glides and undulates in water "

added roboticist Daniela Rus, CSAIL's director. SoFi is operated using a

waterproofed Super Nintendo controller by a diver who can be almost 70
feet (21 meters away). CSAIL researchers tested SoFi in South Pacific coral
reefs and coastalwaters near Taveuni, Fiji's third-largest island, as well as
in an MIT pool.
The untethered robot navigates for up to 40 minutes at depths
reaching almost 60 feet (18 meters). Existing autonomous underwater vehicles
typically are tethered to boats and powered by propellers or jets that can
disrupt the natural environment. SoFi swims alongside fish and other marine
creatures without sending them fleeing. "The robot can be used as a marine
biology instrument and also to measure pollution in Coastal waters, to create
maps,to do inspection, to monitor and track," Rus said.

Global consumption of antibiotics has soared since the year 2000,

stoking calls for new policies to rein in usage - and fuelling fears that the
worldwide threat posed by drug-resistant superbugs willspiral out of control,
researchers said. A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences (PNAS) - based on sales data for 76 countries - shows that
consumption of antibiotics increased 65 percent from 2000 to 2015, driven
Dy users in low and middle income countries.
In the 76 countries studied, the number of so-called "defned daily
doses" consumed rose from 21.2 billion in 2000 to 34.8 billion in 2015. Eili
Kiein, a researcher at the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and

that will drive resistance rates hiaher." One group of experts formed in the
United Kingdom in 2014 estimates that in 2016, there were at least 700,000

deaths related to drug-resistant infections.

Over the 16-year period studied, the increase in antibiotics
Consumption was marginal in the three countries with the highest usage
the United States, France and Italy. But it was a different story elsewhere.
In Asia, consumption of antibiotics more than doubled in India, skyrocketed
9 percent in China and rose 65 percent in Pakistan. The three countries

are the biggest users of antibiotics among the countries deemed low and
middle income for the purposes of the study. They are also countries that
suffer in some areas from poor sanitation, irregular access to vaccines and
a lack of clean drinking water - all conditions that allow infectious diseases
anddrug-resistant infections to spread.
For Klein, eliminating overuse of antibiotics should be "a fírst step
and apriority for every country" especially given the alarming projection that
by 2030, consumption may have increased by another 200 percent.
"Estimates are that 30 percent of use in high income countries is inappropriate,"
Klein told AFP.
