Question 2

(a) (i) The metal ball increases in size (expands) and could not pass through the ring. [1]

(ii) When the metal ball is heated it expands a little because the particles of solid are held
together by strong attraction forces and they have less energy and their movement is limited.
[3]

(b) Wood is a poor conductor of heat energy and is used as an insulator to prevent burning. [1]

(c) Is the increase in size as a result of heating. [2]

{7}

Question 3

(a) Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can only be changed from one form to another.

[2]

(b) (i) Chemical energy

(ii) Kinetic energy

(iii) Heat energy

(iv) Potential energy [4]

(c) (i) Glass

(ii) Concrete

(iii) Fibres [3]

(d) (i) Sun and Coal or Food and Fire [2]

(ii) Light and Heat or electrical and Sound [2]

(e) Chemical energy → Electrical energy + Light energy + Heat energy [4]

Question 4

(a) (Any 3 possible correct answers) – Force have no observable effect e.g trying to lift a rock by
yourself. - Move an object e.g kicking a ball

- Stop a moving object e.g goal keeper handling a ball/ car hitting a wall.

- Change the direction of a moving object e.g hitting a tennis ball against the wall.

- Change the shape of an object e,g moulding

- Slow down a moving object e.g driving up a steep slope

- Increase speed of a moving object e.g riding a bicycle down a steep slope [6]

(b) (any 3 possible correct answers)

Weight Mass
Def: Is a gravitational force exerted on an Def: Is the quantity of matter in an object.
object.
Is measured in Newton Is measured in mg/g/kg/t
Force meter is used to measure weight Scale (bathroom/kitchen/balance/hook
scales)is used to measure mass
Weight varies with gravity Mass remains constant
[3]

(c) 14N [1]

(d) w= ma/ Weight = mass x gravitational acceleration √

= 4kg x 10N/kg
40𝑁𝑘𝑔
= 1𝑘𝑔

= 40N √ [3]

{13}

Question 5

(a) 𝐶𝑂2 / Carbon Dioxide [1]

(b) 𝑁2 / Nitrogen 78% [2]

(c) (any 2 correct answers) - used in hospitals to assist patients with breathing problems.

- used by divers when under water for breathing and Astronauts.

- In making pure steel.

- For welding and cutting steel.

- As a rocket fuel.

- For cell respiration in plants and animals (living organisms). [2]

(d) (i) 3 atoms of oxygen [1]

(ii) It protects the Earth from excessive harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. [1]

(e) (i) When it is passed through clear lime water it turns clear lime water milky. [2]

(ii) It relights a glowing splint. [2]

{11}

Question 6

(a) Are charges that do not move produced by friction. [1]

(b) (i) The charge balloon B attracts the neutral balloon A. [1]

(ii) The balloon B became charged after it was rubbed with a fabric and attracts the neutral
balloon A. or unlike charges attract each other. [1]

(c) Due to a build of electrons (charges) on the material the charged material will try and find a
positive source to neutralise the charge. [2]

(d) Because the atom have the same/ equal number of electrons and protons. Or Because the
atom have the same number of negative (-) and positive (+) charges. [1]

(e) When it gains an electron. [1]

(f) When it loses an electron. [1]
