Solutions to Limits Problems

1. Evaluate: lim (x -> 0) (ax + b) / (cx + d)

Solution:

Substitute x = 0 directly:

(ax + b) / (cx + d) = (a(0) + b) / (c(0) + d) = b / d

Answer: lim (x -> 0) (ax + b) / (cx + d) = b / d

2. Evaluate: lim (x -> 1) (x^2 - 1) / (x - 1)

Solution:

The expression (x^2 - 1) can be factored as ((x - 1)(x + 1)).

Cancel the common factor (x - 1):

lim (x -> 1) ((x - 1)(x + 1)) / (x - 1) = lim (x -> 1) (x + 1)

Substitute x = 1:

x+1=1+1=2

Answer: lim (x -> 1) (x^2 - 1) / (x - 1) = 2

3. Evaluate: lim (x -> 2) (x^2 - 5x + 6) / (x - 3)

Solution:

The numerator (x^2 - 5x + 6) can be factored as ((x - 3)(x - 2)).

Cancel the common factor (x - 3):

lim (x -> 2) ((x - 3)(x - 2)) / (x - 3) = lim (x -> 2) (x - 2)

Substitute x = 2:

x-2=2-2=0

Answer: lim (x -> 2) (x^2 - 5x + 6) / (x - 3) = 0

4. Evaluate: lim (x -> 1) (x - 1) / (sqrt(x) - 1)

Solution:
Multiply numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the denominator:

((x - 1) / (sqrt(x) - 1)) * ((sqrt(x) + 1) / (sqrt(x) + 1))

= ((x - 1)(sqrt(x) + 1)) / ((sqrt(x))^2 - 1^2)

= ((x - 1)(sqrt(x) + 1)) / (x - 1)

Cancel (x - 1):

lim (x -> 1) (sqrt(x) + 1)

Substitute x = 1:

sqrt(1) + 1 = 1 + 1 = 2

Answer: lim (x -> 1) (x - 1) / (sqrt(x) - 1) = 2
