DPP: SOLUTIONS

1. Write the following as complex number.

(i). √−16 (ii) −𝑏 + √−4𝑎𝑐, (𝑎, 𝑐 > 0)

Solution:

(i) √−16 = √16 × √−1 = 𝑖√16 = 4𝑖 = 0 + 4𝑖

(ii) −𝑏 + √−4𝑎𝑐 = −𝑏 + √4𝑎𝑐 × √−1 = −𝑏 + 𝑖 √4𝑎𝑐

2. Write in the “algebraic” form (𝑎 + 𝑖𝑏) of the complex number 𝑧 = 𝑖 5 + 𝑖 + 1.

Solution:

𝑖 2 = −1, 𝑖 3 = −𝑖, 𝑖 4 = 1 and 𝑖 5 = 𝑖 then 𝑧 = 𝑖 + 𝑖 + 1 = 1 + 2𝑖.

𝑖−4
3. Find real and imaginary part of 𝑧 = 2𝑖−3.
DPP: Complex Numbers
Solution:

𝑖−4 𝑖−4 2𝑖+3 −2+3𝑖−8𝑖−12 14 5

𝑧= = . = = + 𝑖
2𝑖−3 2𝑖−3 2𝑖+3 −4−9 13 13

14 5
Hence 𝑅𝑒( 𝑧) = 13 and 𝐼𝑚( 𝑧) = 13

4. Find multiplicative inverse of 3 + 2𝑖.

Solution:

Let z be the multiplicative inverse of 3 + 2𝑖, then

⇒ 𝑧. (3 + 2𝑖) = 1
1 3−2𝑖
⇒ 𝑧 = 3+2𝑖 = (3+2𝑖)(3−2𝑖)

3 2 3 2
⇒ 𝑧 = 13 − 13 𝑖 = (13 − 13 𝑖)

5. Find the value of 𝑥 and 𝑦 for which (2 + 3𝑖)𝑥 2 − (3 − 2𝑖)𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 5𝑖 where 𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ 𝑅.

Solution:

(2 + 3𝑖)𝑥 2 − (3 − 2𝑖)𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 5𝑖

𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡, 𝑤𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑡

⇒ 2𝑥 2 − 3𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 and 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 = 5
⇒ 2𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 = 0 and 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 = 5

⇒ 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 = 0 and 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 = 5

⇒ 𝑥 = 0, 1 and 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 = 5
5
⇒ 𝐼𝑓 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = and if 𝑥 = 1, 𝑦 = 1
2

5
∴ 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 2 and 𝑥 = 1, 𝑦 = 1 are two solutions of the given equation which can also be represented as
5
(0, 2) & (1, 1)

1+𝑖 3−𝑖
6. Simplify 1−𝑖 − (1 + 2𝑖)(2 + 2𝑖) + 1+𝑖.

Solution:

1+𝑖 3−𝑖
1−𝑖
− (1 + 2𝑖)(2 + 2𝑖) + 1+𝑖

1+𝑖 1+𝑖 3−𝑖 1−𝑖

= 1−𝑖 . 1+𝑖 − (1 + 2𝑖)(2 + 2𝑖) + 1+𝑖 . 1−𝑖

3−𝑖−3𝑖−1

DPP: Complex Numbers
2−4𝑖
= 𝑖 + 2 − 6𝑖 +
2

= 2 − 5𝑖 + 1 − 2𝑖

= 3 − 7𝑖

7. If 𝑧 = 2 − 3𝑖 then find 𝑧 2 .

Solution:

Given

𝑧 = 2 − 3𝑖

𝑧 2 = 𝑧. 𝑧

= (2 − 3𝑖)(2 − 3𝑖)
= 2(2) − 2(3𝑖) − (3𝑖)(2) + (3𝑖)(3𝑖)
= 4 − 6𝑖 − 6𝑖 + 9𝑖 2 {𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑖 2 = −1}
= 4 − 12𝑖 + 9(−1)
= 4 − 12𝑖 − 9

Therefore, 𝑧 2 = −5 − 12𝑖

8. (𝑧 − 1)(𝑧 − 1) can be written as

a. 𝑧𝑧 + 1 b. |𝑧|2 + 1 c. |𝑧 − 1|2 d. |𝑧|2 + 2

Solution:

(𝑍 − 1). (𝑍 − 1) = (𝑍 − 1). (𝑍 − 1) = |(𝑍 − 1)|2 (𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑍𝑍 = |𝑍|2 )

9. Find the modulus of the complex quantity (2 − 3𝑖)(−1 + 7𝑖).

Solution:

The given complex quantity is (2 − 3𝑖)(−1 + 7𝑖)

Let 𝑧1 = 2 − 3𝑖 and 𝑧2 = −1 + 7𝑖

Therefore, |𝑧1 | = √22 + (−3)2 = √4 + 9 = √13

and |𝑧2 | = √(−1)2 + 72 = √1 + 49 = √50 = 5√2

Therefore, the required modulus of the given complex quantity = |𝑧1 𝑧2 | = |𝑧1 ||𝑧2 | = √13. 5√2 = 5√26

10. Find the conjugate of 𝑧1 − 𝑧2 if 𝑧1 = 2 + 3𝑖 and 𝑧2 = 5 + 2𝑖.

Solution:

Given
DPP: Complex Numbers
𝑧1 = 2 + 3𝑖
𝑧2 = 5 + 2𝑖
𝑧1 − 𝑧2 = (2 + 3𝑖) − (5 + 2𝑖)
= (2 − 5) + 𝑖(3 − 2)
= −3 + 𝑖

As we know the conjugate of 𝑧 = 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦 = 𝑥 − 𝑖𝑦

Conjugate of 𝑧1 − 𝑧2 = −3 − 𝑖

11. Find the value of (𝑖) 𝑖 50 + 𝑖 −99 (𝑖𝑖) 𝑖 451 + 𝑖 452 + 𝑖 453 + 𝑖 454.

Solution:
1
(𝑖) 𝑖 50 + 𝑖 −99 = (𝑖 4 )12 . 𝑖 2 + 99
𝑖

1 1
= 1. 𝑖 2 + (𝑖4 )24 = −1 + = −1 + 𝑖
.𝑖 3 −𝑖

(𝑖𝑖) 𝑖 451 + 𝑖 452 + 𝑖 453 + 𝑖 454 = 0 (𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑖 = 0)
