What is landscape architecture?
“Landscape architecture is the work of making specific kinds of places
outdoors. It could be designing a town square or a playground—even a
whole city.” [1]

“Landscape architecture is dedicated to the design of healthy

environments and communities, and to protecting the health, safety,
and welfare of people.” [1]

“Landscape architecture encompasses the analysis, planning, design,

management, and stewardship of the natural and built environment
through science and design.” [2]

“Landscape architecture is, quite simply, the design and construction

of outdoor spaces. This can include things like garden architecture,
but it can also include the design and development of green zones in
cities, public parks, hiking trails, campuses, and plazas.” [3]

“Landscape architecture lies at the intersection of personal and

collective experiences of nature; it addresses the material and
historical aspects of landscape even as it explores nature’s more
poetic, even mythological, associations.” [4]

FLOOR PLAN: Hampi Art Labs
• The building’s
form is inspired by
the flow of both
water and the
way that visitors
are supposed to
move through it.

• The Hampi Art

Lab hopes to
foster creative
thinking by
creating a
space where
collaboration
and
experimentation
are possible.
Located on a 5-
acre site in
Karnataka’s city
SITE VIEW: of Vijayanagar,
Hampi Art Lab is

the project is
rooted in a

which people
access the
property. On
