    MICROSCOPIC LIFE

    I. Learning Objectives:
    1. Explain what are microorganisms
    2. Discuss the types of microorganisms
    3. Identify and describe each type of microorganism present on hay infussion
    4. Appreciate the role of microorganisms in our environment

    II. Materials Needed:


    1 Compound microscope 1 bottle of HAY INFUSSION preparation/group
    2 Glass slides with coverslips/group Gloves , Mask, Cotton balls
    50ml Clear CANAL water 2 Prepared slides of Paramecia
    2 Medicine droppers/group Laboratory gown

    III. Procedures:
    Hay Infussion Preparation( at home)

    1. Collect dried rice stalks or dried leaves and put in a wide mouth bottle enough to fill in
    half of the bottle.
    2. Add rain water or tap water until half full.
    3. Cover the bottle and let it stay for 48 hours.(Prepare it two days prior to your lab
    class)
    4. Bring to school during your laboratory class.

    IV. Wet mount preparation of hay infussion and canal water


    1. Prepare your glass slides,cover slips,cotton fibers and dropper.
    2. Shake your hay infusion preparation, get one drop of it and put into your glass slide
    with small cotton fiber.
    3. Slowly cover it with cover slip and avoid bubbles on your preparation.
    V. Microscopic Examination of microorganisms.
    1. Get your microscope and view your specimen using LPO and HPO.
    2. Observe the presence of any microorganisms and identify it.
    3. Do procedure numbers 1-3 for wet mount preparation of your canal water and
    examine it under the microscope.
    4. After viewing your specimen, clean your slides with tap water and save it for future
    activities.

    VI. Data Recording
    1. Observe and identify any microorganisms present in hay infusion and canal water.
    2. Record your data in the table.
