Lesson Plan: Speaking – Giving Opinions

Grade Level: Form 4


Duration: 60 minutes
Objective: Students will practice speaking fluently and confidently, expressing and justifying
their opinions on selected topics.
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, topic prompt cards, worksheets, timer, projector (if
available)

Lesson Outline

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)

 Objective: To activate prior knowledge and introduce the skill of giving opinions.
 Activity: Begin with a question to the class, such as “What do you think about social
media?” Encourage a few students to share their opinions briefly.
 Discussion: Write phrases for giving opinions on the board (e.g., In my opinion, I
believe, Personally, I think, In my view).
 Practice: Have students repeat these phrases to get comfortable with starting opinion
statements.

2. Introduction of Topics (5 minutes)

 Objective: To introduce topics for discussion and set expectations.


 Topics: Prepare five topics (adjust based on relevance to students’ experiences).
Examples:
1. Social Media’s Impact on Society
2. The Importance of Homework
3. Benefits of Reading Books vs. Watching Movies
4. The Role of Technology in Education
5. Is Year-Round Schooling a Good Idea?
 Write each topic on the board and explain that students will discuss their opinions on
each one.

3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)

 Objective: To model and practice giving opinions with justifications.


 Activity:
o Divide students into pairs.
o Assign each pair one of the topics. Give them 2-3 minutes to discuss and
prepare a brief opinion together.
o Ask a few pairs to share their opinions with the class. Encourage them to use
the opinion phrases on the board and add justifications (e.g., because, due to,
as a result of).
o
4. Independent Practice: Group Discussion (20 minutes)

 Objective: To encourage independent practice in expressing opinions.


 Activity:
o Divide students into small groups (4-5 students per group).
o Assign one topic to each group, or allow them to choose one.
o Set a timer for 5 minutes per topic and instruct students to take turns sharing
their opinions and responding to others within their group.
o After discussing one topic, switch to the next topic.
 Monitoring: Walk around the room to observe discussions and offer guidance if
needed.

5. Reflection and Feedback (10 minutes)

 Objective: To review and reinforce the skill of giving opinions.


 Activity:
o Invite a few students to share what they learned or found challenging about
giving opinions.
o Provide constructive feedback on fluency, clarity, and the use of opinion
phrases.
 Wrap-Up: Summarize key points and remind students of useful phrases for giving
opinions.

Assessment:

 Observe students’ ability to express opinions, provide justifications, and engage in


discussions during pair and group activities.
 Use a rubric to assess students’ confidence, fluency, and language use.
