ABSTRACT
In recent years, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has surged,
prompting researchers and engineers to explore innovative motor technologies. One such advancement is the
utilization of five-phase induction motors, which offer several advantages over traditional three-phase motors.
In EVs the three phase VSIs are used for the control of induction motor. These three phase VSIs inject
harmonics into the motor, this causes the degradation of the motor. These harmonics can be eliminated by
increasing the no. of phases or level of the converter. Also in the three phase motors it is found that there is
high current per phase, these high currents cause temperature rise in the conductor. So to overcome the
problems above cited is to use Five Phase Induction Motor. The five induction motor can be used for higher
power applications because increase in no of conductors increases the current carrying capacity. Also the VSI
at 144⁰ produces a smooth operation which results in lower temperature than 180⁰ conduction mode. Five
phase induction motors have smoother operating torque. The Five Phase Induction Motor is simulated and
controlled at different conduction modes and different modes of operation required for an Electric Vehicle
using MATLAB/Simulink.
CHAPTER-1 :-INTRODUCTION

The growing demand for sustainable and ef cient transportation has accelerated the
development of advanced electric vehicle (EV) technologies. Among the key
components of EVs, the motor drive system plays a critical role in determining
performance, reliability, and energy ef ciency. While conventional three-phase
induction motors have been widely used, they face limitations such as lower fault
tolerance and reduced ef ciency at higher loads.

This project, "Analysis and Simulation of Five-Phase Induction Motor for Electric
Vehicles," focuses on addressing these challenges by exploring the potential of ve-
phase induction motors (IMs). Five-phase IMs offer advantages such as higher
ef ciency, improved fault tolerance, and reduced torque ripple, making them a
promising alternative for EV applications. By leveraging advanced control techniques,
this project aims to enhance motor performance, reduce energy losses, and improve
thermal management. The simulation-based approach provides a cost-effective method
to study the performance of ve-phase induction motors under various conditions,
contributing to the advancement of EV technology and sustainable mobility solutions.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining signi cant traction due to their potential to mitigate
environmental concerns, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and enhance energy
ef ciency. One of the critical components of an EV's drive system is its electric motor,
which directly in uences performance, reliability, and overall energy consumption.

Among various motor types, the ve-phase induction motor (FPIM) has emerged as a
promising candidate for EV applications due to its enhanced torque density, fault-
tolerant capabilities, and smoother operation compared to conventional three-phase
motors. The operation of FPIMs in EVs requires effective control strategies to
maximize ef ciency and performance under varying load conditions.

This study focuses on the simulation and analysis of FPIMs for electric vehicle
applications. The research aims to highlight the bene ts of FPIMs in terms of power
quality, fault resilience, and operational ef ciency. The simulation environment enables
a detailed investigation of the motor's performance under various operating scenarios,
providing insights into the feasibility and practicality of FPIMs in EV applications.
Through this work, we aim to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on
sustainable and ef cient motor drive systems, paving the way for more reliable and
eco-friendly electric vehicle solutions.
