Lesson 1
FREEDOM

● one of the most abused word.

● The quality or state comes with the feeling of being free (Merriam Webster)
● The experience of freedom peace, of a certain sense of being true to oneself.

There are two meanings of freedom referred to:

1. Freedom as realized when person does what is good and
2. Freedom wrongly understood as license for doing whatever one pleases, even if is evil.

FREEDOM
● Comes with the feeling of peace, of a certain sense of being true to oneself.
● It is something like the feeling that comes after a good confession to a priest.
● The words of absolution in the sacrament of reconciliation leave a deep and quiet joy in the
heart, releasing it of the heavy weight of sin and guilt.
● It is a feeling that accompanies us when in an instance of self-forgetfulness and generosity.
● We can respond to the needs of others. It is Self-forgetfulness

The Samaritans were a group of people who lived in Samaria - an area north of Jerusalem. They
were half-Jews and half-Gentiles. The ones left behind intermarried with the Assyrians. Thus these
people were neither fully Hebrews nor fully Gentiles.

The Jews or Jewish people believe in the Torah, which was the whole of the laws given to the
Israelites at Sinai.

Lesson 2
MORAL OBLIGATION

● Most people define it as being forced to do it.

● It is necessary for and individual to be truly free
● When a person sees the good values, he/she obliged to obey it, however she/he may reject it,
but he/she violates his/her true freedom.
● Freedom and moral obligation are not opposites.
● To be free means to do good that one is morally obliged.

Lesson 3
CONSCIENCE

● an inner voice that dictates us to do what is good.

2

● It is something that we cannot control, manipulate, or silence, for God is the source of our
conscience.
● It is the inner law in persons which commands us to do what is good and avoid evil.
● Conscience when obeyed, sets us happy and free; when rejected, it leaves us without peace
● We meet God through our conscience. It is where God speaks to us.

Conscience Formation
● There is a difference between a child's conscience and a mature and adult conscience.
Conscience is formed at different levels of influence: instinct, parents, peer group, school,
media, community, environment. The formation of conscience involves a gradual process,
for the formation of conscience is truly the formation of the per-son.

Three kinds/levels of conscience according to the level of the growth of the person.
● Fear conscience- When a person acts according to fear conscience, he/she acts only on the
basis of escaping punishment and of being praised or accepted by authority.
● Moral/ethical conscience- The person who acts on a moral/ ethical conscience acts on the
basis of values. He/she recognizes the inner good or evil of an act.
● Christian-religious conscience- The Christian faith illumines, clarifies and deepens what we
know is truly worthy of being a person.

Lesson 4
SIN

● rejects the good or value that the person is obliged to do.

● violates the fundamental human values of interpersonal and social relations.
● Hurts ones freedom and freedom of others.
● Sin is selfish and an opposite of love

Lesson 5
THE LAW OF GOD

● Natural Moral Law- can be understood using reason. It is our God-given ability to
understand what it means to be in right relationship with God, other people, the world, and
ourselves.
● Moral law revealed by Christ in the Old Testament (the old law)- summarized in the Ten
Commandments (referred to as the Decalogue. They are a special expression of natural law.)
Also called the Law of Moses. It contrasts with the New Law of the Gospels.
● Moral law revealed by Christ in the New Testament (the new law)-
The two great commandments that contain the whole law of God are:
1.Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with
thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength;
2.Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
The chief corporal works of mercy are seven:
4

1.To feed the hungry.

2.To give drink to the thirsty.
3.To clothe the naked.
4.To visit the imprisoned.
5.To shelter the homeless.
6.To visit the sick.
7.To bury the dead.

The chief spiritual works of mercy are seven:

1.To admonish the sinner.

2.To instruct the ignorant.
3.To counsel the doubtful.
4.To comfort the sorrowful.
5.To bear wrongs patiently.
6.To forgive all injuries.
7.To pray for the living and the dead.
● The precepts of the Church- minimum effort we must make in prayer and in living a moral
life.

The Precepts are as follows:

1.Attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
2.Confession of serious sin at least once a year
3.Reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season
4.Observance of the days of fast and abstinence
5.Providing for the needs of the Church
● Canon law-

Covenant- was a relationship of love between God and his Chosen People.

THESE OTHER KINDS OF LAW ARE TRUE BECAUSE THEY EXPRESS THE TRUTH OF
GOD’s ETERNAL LAW.
