1. INTRODUCTION
The Vellore cooperative sugar mill itd Is located at Ammundi was
registered and established under Tamil Nadu Co-operative societies act in
May 1970. Vellore co-operative sugar mill ltd is a renowned Co-Operative
Sugar mill located in Vellore. It was established with aim of processing sugar
can from local farmers to produce high-quality sugar. The mill utilizes
modern machinery and techniques to extract sugar can juice. which is then

The co-operative nature of the mill fosters collaboration and mutual

benefit among its stakeholders, making it an important player in the local
sugar industry. It was founded with the primary objective of processing sugar
cane sourced from local farmers. It was commenced its erection during 1976
and commissioned with a crushing capacity of 1250 TCD in March 1977.
Trial crushing was taken from March1977 to May 1977 by crushing 15,000
M.T. as a maiden crushing season. Based on the cane potentiality and are as
per the recommendation of the government of India.

The crushing of mills was expanded from 1250 TCD to 2500 TCD with
a view to having the uniform and standard economical crushing capacity of
2500 TCD during the year 1989-1990 annual report]. Now, the sugar mill is
still running more than 38 years and above. The mill operates under a
cooperative model, where the farmers themselves are members of the
organization.

This allows them to actively participate in decision- making processes

and ensures that their interests are protected. The sugar mill is equipped with

INDUSTRY PROFILE

9
1.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE
1.2.1 SUGAR INDUSTRY PROFILE:
which is regarded as the original home of sugar cane begins the largest
producer of sugar cane, has considerable potential for the sugar industry to
meet domestic demand arts of the overseas demand. The sugar industry
provides direct employment to large number of people and sugar machinery
manufacturing, distilleries, confectionary etc, is linked to the development of
the sugar industry. The sugar industry is also responsible for the transport and
other services sectors. About 50 million farmers are estimate to the engaged in
the sugar cane cultivation. Sugar industry is very important to the India
national economy, because of its multiple contributions in the shape of
employment and provision of raw material to other industries. Sugar is made
by some plant to store energy that they don't need straight away rather like
animals make fat. People like sugar for its energy 50 some of these plants are
grown commercially to extract the sugar.

10
Sugar is produced in 121 countries and global production now exceeds
120 million tons like a year. Approximately 70% is produced from sugarcane
a very tall grass with big stems which is largely grown in the tropical
countries. The remaining 30% is produced from sugar beet a root crop
resembling a large parsnip grown mostly in the temperature zones of the
north. The industry provides employment to about 3.6 lakh skilled and
unskilled workers. Further, it account for providing employment to core of
thousand in the sugar trade, in the transport sugar. The products are used as
raw material in industries such as alcohol, plastic, synthesis, rubber,
pharmaceuticals and paper etc. The sugar industry ranks II among the major
consumer industries of this country, next to textile industry.

The sugar industry is mostly oriented to a single material namely

sugarcane that form 60% of the total cost of production. Therefore, the
availability of sugarcane and facilities of transporting raw material of the
sugar mill naturally condition the industry of sugar proximity too. The raw
materials is essential because the content of the sugarcane begins to decrease
soon after the cane is cut obtained as the factories for generating power use a
by-product during the production. Therefore, power is not all a dominating
factor determining the location of sugar industry. In recent times, techniques
feasibility and economically visibility of sugar project have been gives
important in the location of sugar industry. In India major sugar cane growing
state are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and
Andhra Pradesh. Theses six state contribute more than 85% of total sugar
production in the country.

11
1.2.2 HISTORY OF SUGAR MILL INDUSTRY
The Sugar industry is proud to be an industry, which spreads the taste
of sweetness the mankind. The history of origin of this industry is as old as
the history of main himself. Sugar is generally made from sugarcane and beet.
In India, sugar is produced mainly from sugarcane. India had introduced
sugarcane all over the worlds and is a leading country in the making sugar
from sugarcane.

The sugarcane industry occupies potion in the organization industries of India.

It ranks second next to cotton, textile industry in importance. The Sugar
Industrial established in 1970. It provides employment to nearly Slakhs of
people directly. There were more than 467 factories in the country in 1994-95
with an annual production of 1550 to 200 lakhs tones.
The Sugar Industries contribution revenue of the central and state
government a sum or Rs.350Crore in the form of taxes. The sugarcane is
being grown in about 2.5 lakhs acres. Every year the crop is mostly contracted
around Vellore, Ambur. Thirupatur and coastal areas.

12
1.2.3 LOCATION FACTOR
In recent years, the location factor for a sugar mill depends on several
factors such as proximity to sugar cane farms, access to transportation, and
availability of water and energy sources. It is often located in area with a
suitable climate for sugar cane cultivation. The location factors have
influenced the dispersal of sugar cane cultivated in subtropical regions and the
development of cane in the south in mainly responsible for bringing about
location changes in industry

Further the sugar cane industry has received greater inputs from the
completion of numerous irrigation projects like the Irwin canal in Mysore
(Karnataka). Niramsagar and Tungabhadra projects in madras (Tamil Nadu).
Added to this, the discriminatory policies in pursed by the government are
also responsible for the faster rate of the growth of the industry in the south.

Given transport facilities and access in necessarily dependent upon the

availability of cane in the region. This concentration is sustained from
observation of the trend of sizes established in different region of this country
in relation to availability of cane. Comparatively the sugar mill in Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra where continuous availability of cane is
assured to be large. Grant of production to their industry in 1931 also helped
the units to increase their size.

The average per day crushing capacity of the sugar factories working in
our county varies from 220 tons to 3200 tons per day. In Uttar Pradesh and
Bihar majority of the sugar mill have a cane crushing capacity of 2500 tons of
sugar cane per day is considered to be economical unit, under the present day
working conditions.

13
1.2.4 NATIONAL SCENARIO OF SUAGR INDSUTRY
The first sugar mill in the country was set up in 1903 in the united provinces.
There are 566 installed sugar mills, of which 453 were in operation in the year
2002-2003 and utilized 194.4 million ton of sugarcane (69% of total cane
production) to produce 20.14 million tons of sugar. About Slakhs workmen
are directly employed in the sugar. About 5 lakhs workmen are directly
employment in the sugar industry besides many in industries, which utilizes
by- products of sugar industry as raw material.

India is the largest consumer and second largest producer of sugar in

the world. The India sugar industry is the second largest agro-industry located
in the rural India. India sugar industry has been a focal point for socio
economic development in the rural areas. About 50 million sugarcane farmers
and a large number of agriculture laborers are involved in sugarcane
cultivated and ancillary activities, constituting 7.5% of the rural population.
Besides, the industry provides employment to about 2 million skilled/
semiskilled workers and others mostly from the rural areas. The industry not
only generates power for its own requirement but surplus power for export to
the grid based on by-product-Bagasse. It also produces ethyl alcohol, which is
used for industrial and potable uses, and can be used to the manufacture
Ethanol, an ecology friendly and renewable fuel for blending with petrol.

The sugar industry in the country uses only sugarcane as input; hence
sugar companies have been established in large sugarcane growing states like
Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra. Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra
Pradesh. In sugar year 2003-2004, these six states contribution more than 85%
of the total sugar production in the country: Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra and
Karnataka together contribute more than 65% of total production.

Sugar cane occupies about 2.7% of the total cultivated area and it is one
of the most important cash crops in the country. The area under sugar cane
gradually increased from 2.7 million hectares in 2010-11 to 4.3 million
hectares in 2011-12, mainly because of much larger diversion of land from
other from other crops to sugar cane by the framers for economic reason. The
sugarcane area, however, declined in the year 2015-16 to 3.7 million hectares
and to 3.7 mill jon hectares in 20, mainly due to drought and pest attacks.

16
1.3.4 SUGAR PRODUCTION:

Most of the sugar in India is manufactured and sold as "White Crystal

Sugar" which is produced by double suspiration process, while the norm in
developed and emerging nations is refined sugar. which is produced by the
phosphoflotation process. Most of the mills India are not equipped to make
refined sugar mills which are designed to produce refined sugar can
manufacture sugar not only from sugar cane but also from raw sugar which
can be imported. Therefore, such mills can run their production all the year
rounds, as opposed to single state mills, which are dependent upon the
seasonal supply of sugarcane.

1.3.5 SUGAR SEASON:

Once sugar season is twelve month from September to October to

September (Accounting year). The actual crushing depends upon the
availability of the sugar cane
