(f) x + y + 2z = 0; 2x + 4y − 3z = 0; 3x + 6y + −5z = 0.
(g) x + y + z + w = 0; 2x + 3y + z − 2w = 0; 3x + 5y + z = 0.
(h) x + 2y + 2z = 1; 3x + 7y + 9z = 2; −x − 4y − 7z = 0.
(i) 2x + y + 2z = 4; 2x + 2y = 5; 2x − y + 6z = 2.
(j) x + y + z = 1; 2x + 2y + 2z = −2; 3x + 3y + 3z = −3.
(k) x + y + z = 0; 3x + 5y + 4z = 0; 3x + 6y + 5z = 0.
(l) 2x + 5y − 19z = 34; 3x + 8y − 31z = 54.
(m) −x + y + 2z = 1; 2x + 3y + z = −2; 5x + 4y + 2z = 4.
(n) x − y = 9; −2x + 2y = −3.
(o) x + 2y + z + 3w = 0; x − y + w = 0; 5y − z + 2w = 0.
(p) 2x + 6z = 0; 3x − 2y + 11z = 0; 3x − y + 7z = 0.

(2) Define rank of a matrix.

Give examples of matrices A and B of same size such that
rank(A + B) < rank(A), and rank(A + B) < rank(B)
1
(3) Let A be an m × n matrix (where m < n) whose rank is r.
(a) What is the largest and the smallest value that r can
take ?

(b) If AX = B is a system of m linear equations in n

unknowns then write the conditions based on the ranks for
the system to be consistent, inconsistent, having unique
solution and having infinitely many solutions.

(4) Find the rank of following matrices.

 
1 2 −3
(a) A = 2 −1 4 
4 3 −2
 
−1 1 1
(b) B =  3 −1 0 
2 −4 −5
 
−1 1 1 0
(c) C =  4 3 −1 0 
2 −4 −2 −5
(5) Examine the consistency of following systems of equations.
If consistent, find its solution.

(a) x + y + z = 6; x − y + 2z = 5; 3x + y + z = 8;
2x − 2y + 3z = 7.
(b) 2x−3y +7z = 5; 3x+y −3z = 13; 2x+19y −47z = 32.
(c) x + y + z = 4; 2x + 5y − 2z = 3; x + 7y − 7z = 5.
(d) x + y + z = 4; 2x + 5y − 2z = 3.
(e) x + y − 2z + w + 3t = 1;
2x − y + 2z + 2w + 6t = 2; 3x + 2y − 4z − 3w − 9t = 3.
(f) 2x − 3y + 5z = 1; 3x + y − z = 2; x + 4y − 6z = 1.
(6) Determine the non-trivial solution of the system of equations
4x − y + 2z + w = 0; 2x + 3y − z − 2w = 0;
7y − 4z − 5w = 0; 2x − 11y + 7z + 8w = 0.

(7) Show that if λ 6= −5, the system of equations

3x − y + 4z = 3; x + 2y − 3z = −2; 6x + 5y + λz = −3 has
a unique solution. If λ = −5, then show that the system is
consistent. Determine the solution in each case.

(8) For which value(s) of the constant k does the system

x − y = 3; 2x − 2y = k have no solutions ? Exactly one
solution ? Infinitely many solutions ? Explain with reasoning.

(9) For what values of a does the following system of equations

have a solution ?
3x − y + az = 1
3x − y + z = 5

(10) For what value(s) of λ, the system of equations

3x−2y +λz = 1; 2x+y +z = 2; x+2y −λz = −1 will have
no unique solution? Will the equations have any solution for
these values of λ ?
