Interactive Writing

1. What is it?
 Interactive writing (updated from April 2nd, 2024) includes a main question and a follow-up question.
For the main question, test takers are given 5 minutes to write, and for the follow-up one, they are
given 3 minutes.
 There are three types of main questions:
1. Describe type
Ex: Describe a time you were surprised. What happened?
2. Recount type
Ex: People have jobs because they need money to live, but what are some other
important reasons that people have jobs?
3. Make argument type
Ex: People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something
more or different. Do you agree or disagree? Why? Give specific reasons for your
answer.
 You are asked to write at least 50 words. However, you should aim for more of course.
 It counts toward your literacy and production sub scores.

2. Tips to write a response for the “Main question”


 Read the question carefully.
 Manage your time by having a careful plan like this:
1. Brainstorming/outlining
2. Writing
- First, state your answer clearly.
- Then give one reason.
- Provide enough details for your first reason.
- After that, give another reason.
- Support it with details.
- Finally, write a conclusion.
3. Editing
 Use various sentence structure.
 Use different words and phrases.
3. Tips to write a response for the “follow-up question”
 This question is formed and presented to you based on your response for the “Main question”.
 Because you have just 3 minutes for this one, you might not be able to give 2 reasons.
 Manage your time this way:
1. Brainstorming/outlining

- First, state your answer clearly.
- Then give one reason.
- Support you reason with details.
- Finally, write a conclusion.
3. Editing
Sample Question
1. Write about the topic below for 5 minutes.
Freelance artists make a living by independently selling their art and artistic skills rather than
working for a company. What are some pros and cons of this career? Include specific reasons in
your answer.

2. Write a follow-up response for 3 minutes.


How might being a freelance artist affect one’s exposure and recognition in the art community?
Explain how this could be a pro or con of this career choice.
