WET SEDIMENT TRAP DESIGN

1 Sizing a Wet Sediment Trap

Limitation in design

Table 12.15 Rain Fall = 50.00 mm

Catchment Area
Total Catchment Area = 2 ha
= 20000 m2

To provide silt Trap basin with earth embankment and emergency spillway.

Assumptions

1 Total storage 125m3/ha over contributing area

2 Run off quantity up to 10 ARI

3 Design Criteria of Sediment Trap for Sediment Control as per Table 12.15

4 The temporary basin design life is 6 to 12 months.

1 Sizing of sediment trap.

Rainfall = 50.00 mm

Table 12.5 Total volume = 125 m3/ha

(a) Settling Zone Volume & Total Volume

Wet Sediment Basin Sizing Guidelines,

the nearest magnitud of design storm event in mm = 50.00 mm

Therefore :

Total Basin volume = 125 m3/ha x 2.0 ha = 250 m3 Req. Volume

(b) Sediment Storage Zone

The required total sediment storage volume, V1

V1 = Total Volume = 250 m3

For a side slope z = 2 (H) : 1 (V), the dimensions at the top of the sediment storage zone are :

W1 = = = 12.0 m
L1 ≥ 2W1 ok
L1 = = = 25.0 m

The required depth for the sediment TRAP, which must be at least 1.0m, can be calculated
from the following relationship :

2 3 2
V1 = Z Y1 - Z Y1 (W1 + L1) + Y1 (W1 L1)

which gives,

2 3 2
250 = ( 2 ) Y1 - ( 2 ) Y1 ( 37.0 ) + Y1 ( 300.0 )

3 2
= 4 Y1 -( 74.0 ) Y1 + Y1 ( 300.0 )

use trial and error method to find Y1 ,

For Y1 = 1 m , V1 = 230.0 m3

For Y1 = 1.2 m , V1 = 260.4 m3

For Y1 = 1.4 m , V1 = 285.9 m3

Y1 = 1.200 > 1.000 m minimum depth requirement

V1 = 260.4 > 250 m3 of sediment storage volume OK!

( c ) Overal Basin Dimension

Base : WB = W2 - 2 x Z x [ y2 ] = 7.2 m say 8 m

LB = L2 - 2 x Z x [ y2 ] = 20.2 m say 20 m

Depth :
Depth of Sediment Storage y1 = 1.20 m

Side slope , Z = 2.0 (H): 1.0 (V)

B) Determine the size of Spillway

Q required = = 0.52 m3/s

Eqn. 2.6 Q spillway = Csp B Hp
Q = emergency spillway discharge (m3/sec)
Csp = spillway discharge coefficient
B = emergency spillway base width (m)
Hp = effective head on the spillway crest (m)

Trial spillway dimensions :

B = 2.00 m
Hp = 0.30 m
Csp = 1.60 m

Q spillway = 0.53 m3/sec > Q10 = 0.52 m3/sec OK!
