AUDITION NOTICE

Harlem Duet

Audition dates: September 13 & 14, 2021, 2pm – 6pm


Location: BMO Theatre Centre, Vancouver, BC

PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION
Harlem Duet by Djanet Sears will be presented in Bard on the Beach’s 2022 Season on the
Howard Family Stage in Vancouver’s Vanier Park/Sen̓ákw .

Often called a prelude to Shakespeare’s Othello, Harlem Duet tells the story of Othello and his
first wife, Billie—the woman he married before Desdemona. Their history is told through the
lives of three couples, each named Othello and Billie, during eras of special significance in the
Black American Experience: 1860, prior to the Emancipation Proclamation; 1928, at the height
of the historic Harlem Renaissance; and 1997, post-civil rights and pre-21st century.

PRODUCTION DATES
Rehearsals: May 16 – June 20, 2022
Opening: June 21, 2022
Closing: July 17
Possible extension until: July 21

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
We are seeking to fill the following roles:

Amah: 30s, Black. Kind, gentle, and supportive sister-in-law to Billie. Loving and considerate,
she wants the best for Billie and is concerned about her well-being.

Magi: The landlady, 40s, Black. Best friend to Billie. Confident, full of life with a big personality,
knows what she wants and goes for it.

Interested artists please submit a headshot and resume (PDF format only) to
auditions@bardonthebeach.org with the subject line: Harlem Duet – submission – [FULL
NAME]. Please indicate the role(s) you would like to audition for. Please also indicate your
status with Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.

Submission deadline: 5pm PST on September 10, 2021


We thank all who apply but only those selected for an audition will be contacted. Those
selected will asked to prepare a scene and/or monologue from the play that will be provided
ahead of time. Auditions will take place in person following all necessary health & safety
guidelines.

ABOUT BARD ON THE BEACH


Bard on the Beach is Western Canada’s largest not-for-profit, professional Shakespeare Festival.
Presented in a magnificent setting on the waterfront in Vancouver’s Vanier Park/Sen̓ákw , the
Festival offers Shakespeare plays, related dramas, and several special events in two
performance tents form June through September.
