Problem Set 4

September 24, 2024

1. A mass m hangs on a spring of spring constant k. In the position of static equilibrium the length of
the spring is ℓ. If the mass is drawn sideways and released, the resulting motion will be a combination
of (a) pendulum swings and (b) extension and compression of the spring. Describe this system in
terms of coupled oscillators.
2. A toy model for CO2 molecule is shown in the figure below. It consists of three masses (m1 , m2 and
m3 ) coupled via two springs (spring constant k)

(a) Set up and solve the equations for the normal modes in which the masses oscillate along the
line joining their centers.
(b) Using m1 = m3 = 16 units and m2 = 12 units, find the ratios of the frequencies of the two
normal modes.

3. Consider the arrangement shown in the figure below. Mass M1 resting on a frictionless surface is
connected to a support via a spring of spring constant k. Another mass M2 is supported by a string
of length ℓ from M1 . M1 is free to slide on the surface and M2 is free to oscillate.

(a) Using small angle approximation, derive the k M1

equations of motion for M1 and M2 .

(b) For M1 = M2 = M , find the normal mode fre-

quencies of the system. l

(c) Describe the normal mode motions for M1 = M2
M2 = M and g/l >> k/M . x2
4. Two identical pendulums are connected by a light coupling spring. Each pendulum has a length of
0.4 m. With the coupling spring connected, one pendulum is clamped and the period of the other is
found to be 1.25 sec. (Take g = 9.8 m/sec2 ). With neither pendulum clamped, what are the periods
of two normal modes?
5. Three blocks of mass m each are connected by springs as shown below.

(a) Find the frequencies of the normal modes.

(b) Find the normal mode frequencies for the case k ′ = k0 .
