ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY:


Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna was established by the Chanakya
National Law University Act, 2006 (Act No. 24 of 2006) and has UGC’s approval under section
2(f) and section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. The primary objective of the University is to offer
multidisciplinary, research based comprehensive legal education to young legal minds and
simultaneously instilling in them respect for the rule of law and values enshrined in the
Indian Constitution. The University has also been statutorily mandated to contribute to
nation building through legal awareness, dissemination of legal knowledge and conducting
researches on the legal issues of contemporary relevance and other subjects of public concern.

The University has a lush green campus in the heart of the historical city of Patna, the capital
of the state of Bihar which was the first capital of India during the Mauryan empire. Ashoka
the Great was the King of Patliputra. It is located within an educational hub along with other
great educational institutions leading to creation of an ambiance of intellectual exchanges and
mutual learning among students of different disciplines. Located within an easy distance
from the Airport and Railway Station, the campus boasts of an impressive array of facilities
and amenities such as well-equipped academic and administrative blocks with newly
renovated smart classrooms, a rich library with huge collection of e-resources, state-of-the-
art accessibility lab, language lab, café, basketball court, football ground, boys’ and girls’
hostels and well equipped gymnasium for both male and female students. The University
also provides comfortable accommodation for teaching and non-teaching staff. Further, an
advanced facilitation centre is under construction to accommodate a well-equipped Health
Clinic.

The University offers five year integrated undergraduate B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) & B.B.A., LL.B.
(Hons.) degree programs and one year Master of Laws (LL.M) program. The University also
offers research programs such as Ph.D., D. Phil. and LL.D. The courses seek to enable students
to meet requirements of the Corporate Law Firms, Judiciary and Legal Profession including
Alternative Dispute Redressal. CNLU aims to produce not a moral technicians but extremely
competent and socially sensitive professionals who would meaningfully contribute to the
building of Vikshit Bharat by 2047. Presently, University is undergoing a quite revolution to
drastically improve its academic programmes with several bold and innovative changes
having been introduced in 2023-24.

To achieve its objectives in contemporary times of social, political, technological, and climate
upheavals and to build students’ competencies in understanding, engaging, and resolving
ensuing challenges effectively, the university, in conformity with the New Education Policy,
2020, has adopted a multidisciplinary approach towards teaching. CNLU believes in the
integration of knowledge. To this end, the teaching methodology seeks a blend of traditional
and innovative methods like inquiry-based and cooperative learning approaches, allowing
each faculty member an opportunity to design and facilitate subjects in the most
contemplative, creative, and effective manner. We also help students in imbibing

professional, leadership and interpersonal skills while working in numerous Student
Committees such as Moot Court Committee, Academic and Debating Committee, Debating
Club, Legal Aid Cell, Pro-Bono Club, NSS Cell, Civil Service Committee, Sports Committee
etc. This helps them in developing versatile personality.

To keep students in sync with the changing requirements of the profession and society, the
University consistently revise and update its courses and subjects offered therein. To this end,
the University has expanded its undergraduate course catalogue to include a wide array of
elective subjects covering contemporary legal debates, allowing students to tailor their
academic journey to their unique interests and aspirations. At the postgraduate level too, the
University offers diverse range of specialisations in LL.M. such as Constitutional Law and
Administrative Law, International Law, Corporate and Commercial Law, Intellectual
Property and Information Technology Law, and Criminal Law. Students are also offered
clinical courses, seminar courses, credit courses and optional papers in emerging fields of
law.

The institution's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) was established in strict compliance
with the University Grants Commission (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal of Sexual
Harassment of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions)
Regulations, 2015. This committee plays a vital role in proactively addressing and preventing
instances of sexual harassment within the workplace, ensuring a supportive and respectful
environment for all. It also upholds principles of gender equality and harmony, fostering a
culture where discrimination and harassment against women are strictly prohibited. The ICC

organizes periodic initiatives aimed at empowering women, striving to create a nurturing
atmosphere that promotes their well-being and professional development.

The University has also established a Restorative Justice Committee to promote meaningful
engagement between students in conflict, aiming to resolve issues through mutual respect,
reintegration, and reform. This committee plays a crucial role in fostering harmonious
relationships among students and promoting a peaceful campus life.

RESEARCH CENTRES:
The university provides a rigorous academic environment through its vibrant research
centres and distinguished chairs. Key centres such as the Child Rights Centre (CRC), Centre
for Advanced Research on Corporate and Insolvency Law (CARCIL), Centre for Innovation,
Research and Facilitation in Intellectual Property for Humanity and Development (CIRF-In-
IPHD), Chanakya Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CCADR), Centre for
Innovation, Incubation and Legal Entrepreneurship (CIILE), and Centre for Law and
Economics (CLE) actively engage students in various activities. These include internships,
research enhancements, leadership development, and opportunities to interact with industry
experts. The Panchayati Raj Chair, Govt. of Bihar and the IPR Chair, supported by DPIIT
under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India foster collaboration
among students, faculty, and governmental bodies to advance grassroots democracy and
intellectual property frameworks.

Additionally, CNLU's Incubation Cell aims at fostering entrepreneurial spirit by incubating


more than 40 start-ups, providing practical experience in business incubation and
management essential for students and budding entrepreneurs preparing them for diverse
roles in the global economy. The university has also established partnerships through
Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with numerous national and international
institutions, facilitating valuable opportunities for faculty and student exchange programs.

FACULTY:
Our faculty comprises a diverse and gifted groups of passionate teachers and scholars who
are devoted to learn from students as their co-learners. They consider them as facilitators.
They remain ardently engaged in teaching, research, and guiding students. The university
has instituted a mentor-mentee policy to assist mentees in honing their professional skills and
knowledge, guiding them in setting and accomplishing career aspirations, and steering them
towards success. The faculty's profound expertise and unwavering pursuit of excellence play
a crucial role in ensuring that CNLU graduates are equipped with all the necessary skills.

A HUB OF CO-CURRICULAR AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:


CNLU students actively engage in a diverse array of co-curricular and extracurricular
activities, including moot court competitions, debating championships, and inter-
institutional events. These platforms give invaluable opportunities for students to hone their
skills, collaborate with peers, and build professional networks. CNLU hosts two prestigious
annual Moot Court Competitions—one dedicated to Commercial Laws and another focusing
on Cyber Law —in partnership with regulatory bodies. Additionally, the university's

incubation cell organizes Vyapar, a startup support competition, while the Legal Aid Cell
hosts Vidhikta. CNLU's cultural and literary festival, Jeevatva, further enriches the student
experience. These initiatives attract participants from law schools across the nation and
CNLU teams have consistently done wonders in both National and International Moot Court
Competitions.

Throughout the academic year, CNLU students organize Ethnic Day, Sports Tournaments
and Social Awareness Campaigns. These events showcase talents, celebrate diversity, and
foster friendships. CNLU's dedication to co-curricular and extracurricular activities offers
students ample opportunities for personal and skill development, emphasizing holistic
growth of its students.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
The Panchayati Raj Chair embodies Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy that "the voice of the
people may be said to be God's voice," underscoring the Panchayat's role as the voice of the
people. The chair aims to make actionable recommendations for the effective local
governance. The Child Rights Centre actively collaborates with the Government of Bihar,
assisting in the training of JJB and CWC members, judicial officers, para legal volunteers, civil
society organizations, and childcare institutions in child rights advocacy and capacity
building.

The university provides diverse and accessible learning avenues such as open lectures,
symposiums, and workshops for the local community. We also offer legal aid through our
Legal Aid Cell and participate in the National Service Scheme (NSS) under the Ministry of
Youth and Sports. Additionally, we support newcomers, MSMEs, and large corporate
enterprises, aligning with policies like Start-Up and Make in India.

RAGGING FREE CAMPUS:


Ragging, a societal affliction, has no place within our institution. We have established a robust
mechanism, including the office of Proctor, Disciplinary Committee, and Anti-Ragging Cell
& Squad, all operating in strict adherence to the guidelines and regulations set forth by the
UGC.

ADMISSIONS : UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME (U.G.)

1. DIRECT ADMISSION TO FOREIGN NATIONALS AND NON-RESIDENT INDIANS (NRIs):

There are five seats for Foreign Nationals and five seats for Non Resident Indians (NRIs).

Those who wish to apply for B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) or B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) against the Foreign
Nationals seats need not take CLAT-2025 and may apply directly to the University in the
prescribed format as given on the university website, i.e., www.cnlu.ac.in. Their merit shall
be finalized on the basis of their percentage of marks in 10+2 / Intermediate or its equivalent.
In case of any grading system, the equivalent percentage shall be taken into consideration.
However, they shall fulfil other eligibility criteria of CLAT-2025. The Minimum percentage

of marks in 10+2 / Intermediate or its equivalent for admission to B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) or
B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) course will be 45%. In case of tie, preference shall be given to higher
percentage of 10th marks. In case of further tie, preference shall be given to the one with higher
age. Further tie, if any, shall be done by drawing a lot.

Candidates who wish to apply under Foreign Nationals category shall submit the duly filled
in application form which can be downloaded from our website www.cnlu.ac.in with all
supporting documents along with the one time non-refundable fee of Rs. 7,500/- or its
equivalent by way of DD drawn in favour of Registrar, Chanakya National Law University,
Patna payable at Patna. The dates shall be announced later on our website.

Selected candidates shall complete the admission process by paying required fees in full on
the scheduled dates to be announced in the University website: www.cnlu.ac.in

The Candidates seeking admission against NRIs seats will be required to apply directly to
the University in the prescribed format along with the supporting documents as per the
notification to be placed on the University Website. The admission under NRI category shall
strictly be made on the basis of All India Rank (AIR) of CLAT-2025. Candidates have to fulfil
eligibility and criteria of CLAT-2025.

NOTE: Unfilled seats of the Foreign Nationals and NRIs shall not be filled in by any other
categories.

2. B.A., LL.B. (HONS.) AND B.B.A., LL.B. (HONS.) COURSE:


The integrated 5-year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) programs are open to
students who have completed their 12 years of school education and have joined CNLU after
clearing the CLAT examination. These courses offer integrated degrees in Bachelor of
Arts/Bachelor of Business Administration and Law, involving the study of compulsory
subjects, honours subjects, and electives.

In the arts/business administration cohort, students are required to study twelve


foundational subjects and two language papers up to the third year. Law students, in
accordance with BCI Regulations, undertake twenty-eight compulsory subjects, including
four clinical subjects. Students must also select specialised elective courses offered by the
University. This academic session, the University provides a catalogue of a wide array of
elective papers in areas of Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, IPR, Technology and
Commercial Law. These courses aim to deepen students’ understanding in their chosen legal
field, fostering independent learning, improving research capabilities, acquiring problem-
solving skills with critical thinking to enhance their career prospects. Below is the tentative

SEAT MATRIX:

The selection of 138 students will be strictly based on merit-cum-preference determined by the
Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2025. Candidates must also meet the age and
qualification requirements specified in CLAT-2025. Admission is subject to reservation as per
the Bihar (In Admission in Educational Institutions) Reservation Act, 2003 (Bihar Act 16 of 2003)
and other applicable rules, which are as follows:

The total number of seats available for Undergraduate (UG) programs is 138 (One Hundred
Thirty-Eight), evenly divided into two categories: 69 seats for the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Course
and 69 seats for the B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Course. All seats will be filled in on the basis of All
India Rank of CLAT-2025.

The candidates out of the State of Bihar shall not claim the benefits of reservation under
EWS as per the Bihar Reservation in vacancies in posts and in services and in Admission
in the Educational Institutions (For Economically Weaker Sections) Act, 2019.

**The relevant certificate should be issued by the competent authority of Bihar Government
for (1) Extremely Backward Classes (Annexure-I), (2) Backward Classes (Annexure-II), (3)
Scheduled Caste (SC) and (4) Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Candidates of Bihar seeking admission under Other Backward Classes (OBC) category
for Chanakya National Law University, Patna shall mention in the application form itself
whether they belong to BC or EBC categories of Bihar. Failure to mention the specific
category BC/EBC will not entitle them for Reservation benefits as there is no such
category as Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Bihar Reservation Act, 2003.

***ABOUT WOMEN OF BACKWARD CLASSES (WBC):


All women candidates of Reserved Categories (Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes,
Extremely Backward Classes & Backward Classes) of Bihar who will be applicants of CLAT-
2025 and who opt for CNLU are hereby requested to fill up their application forms in their
own categories. At the time of admission after filling up all above-mentioned reserved
categories seats as per their percentage, reserved seats (04) for WBC (Women of Backward
Classes) will be made available to reserved categories women as per their CLAT-2025 rank
among reserved categories of women of Backward Classes.

Candidates taking admission through CLAT-2025 shall pay a total amount of Rs. 2,62,718/-

Nationals / Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) shall pay a total amount of Rs. 4,56,758/- (Rupees

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:
The Post Graduate Programme in Law aims to primarily train students to acquire an in-depth
knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for a successful career in academics, while also
providing them opportunities for personal and professional growth. It intends to develop
and refine students' interpretational, advisory, arbitral, managerial, observatory, research,
and academic skills.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES:
The course gives opportunities to students to specialize in their chosen field of law, equipping
them with teaching skills alongside contemporary pedagogy and legal research skills.
Students will develop an appreciation for humanistic values and commit themselves to
promoting access to justice.

opt for CNLU are hereby requested to fill up their application forms in their own categories.
