Past tense

Regular verbs (-ed).

General review
⚫Take a look at the verbs list, the groups,
conjugations and start learning them.
⚫1: Verbos en presente:(lo que ya vimos).
⚫2. Verbos en pasado (la que necesita en
este momento).
⚫3. Verbos en p. participle (esta no se
necesita aún, pero si más adelante).
⚫4. Meaning: (significado de los verbos en
Español).
⚫Es importante mencionar que los verbos en pasado
se dividen en dos grandes grupos:

Verbos regulares e irregulares.


⚫A: Verbos regulares: Reciben este nombre porque
tienen una terminación común o “regular”. Es decir,
que terminan en –ed. (la primera tabla de la lista
de verbos).

⚫For instance: work, walk, close, watch, wash, talk,


study, look, enter, arrive etc.
⚫B: Verbos irregulares: Reciben este nombre
porque NO tienen una terminación común. Se
clasifican en tres grupos, en la lista de verbos
adjunta podrán observar mejor esos
grupos.

⚫Primer grupo todas las columnas (presente,


pasado y p. participle) se pronuncian y se
escriben igual.
⚫Segundo grupo: la primera columna
(presente) se escribe de manera diferente. La
segunda y la tercera (pasado y p. participle) son
iguales.
⚫Tercer grupo: todas las columnas son
diferentes.

⚫De modo que con los verbos irregulares hay


que tener un poco más de paciencia,
recomiendo practicar mucho para poder
memorizarlos.
Formulas in past
Affirmative:
Subject + verb in past + complement.
I sang in the school last year.
They studied English three years ago (hace).

Negative:
Subject + did + not + verb (in present) + complement.
She didn’t sing in the school last year.
We did not study English three years ago (hace).
Interrogative:
⚫ Did + subject + verb (in present) + complement + ?
⚫ Did she sing in the school last year?
⚫ Did we study English three years ago? (hace).
Answer:
Yes, she did. / No, she didn’t /did not.
Yes, we did. / No, we didn’t/ did not.

Wh + did + subject + verb (in present) + complement + ?


a. Where did she go last Christmas?
b. When did they leave home?
Answer:
a. She went to USA. She had a great time there.
b. They left home at 5:00 am. They got up early!
Past complements
⚫Yesterday: (ayer): I did not call my
friend yesterday.

⚫Last week, last month, last year: (la


semana pasada, el mes pasado, el año
pasado).

⚫Last year, I went to Bogotá two times.


⚫My sister gave me a gift last month. GIVE
(present).
⚫Last week, the apprentices presented an
exam.
⚫Ago: hace (para cuando hablas de una
cierta cantidad de tiempo).
⚫I lived in Bogotá five years ago.
⚫In (+ año)
⚫I got graduated from high school in 2005.

Activities!
1. Read the text, choose the correct form (was/were)
and then, answer the questions.
 My name is Mary, five years ago; I was/were in New
Jersey in a summer camp. The weather was/were sunny
and the nature was/were very beautiful. I was/were
with some friends and my two brothers Mark and
Harry. I was/were 14 years; my brother Mark was/were
12 and Harry was/were 12 too, because they are twins.
It was/were fantastic to swim in the river and make
bonfires in the forest.
One day we went to the city to know some places. We
was/were in the supermarket, it was/were very big. In the
