An axis of symmetry or a line of symmetry a line that divides the shape into half when the shape is folded along this line, two parts overlap each other exactly a regular polygons with n sides has n axes of symmetry example : equilateral triangle 3 sides 3 axes of symmetry square 4 sides 4 axes of symmetry
Example 2 Draw the axis of symmetry of the regular polygon in the diagram and state its number of the axes of symmetry.
Drawing and constructing regular polygons - Using a ruler, a protractor and a pair of compasses. 1. Draw a circle using a pair of compasses. 2. Divide 360o by n to obtain each equal division of the angle at the centre. 3. Using a protractor, draw the angles. 4. Join the point using a ruler. Example 3 Draw a regular hexagon by dividing equally the angle at the centre.
-Using a ruler and a pair of compasses (if given the length of sides of polygon) 1. Draw a circle with the radius equal to the length of sides of polygon. 2. Keeping the pair of compasses spread out the same length, place it at the circumference. 3. Draw an arc across the circumference of the circle and mark the point of intersection. 4. Repeat this step for every new point. 5. Using a ruler, join all the adjacent points.
Example 4 Using a ruler and a pair of compasses, construct a regular hexagon with sides 5 cm each.
Interior and Exterior Angles of Polygons Interior angle the angle formed inside a polygon between two adjacent sides Exterior angle the angle formed outside a polygon between any one side and extended side adjacent to it. For example, Interior angle
Exterior angle
The interior and exterior angle at the same vertex of a polygon are supplementary. Interior angle + exterior angle = 180o
102o y 69o x
The sum of interior angles of a polygon Sum of interior angles of a polygon = (n 2) x 180o Where n = number of sides
Example 6
The sum of exterior angles of a polygon the sum of exterior angles of any polygon is 360o
Example 7 65o
108o 96o
Exterior angles of a regular polygon = 360o n Where n = number of sides Example 9 Find the size of each exterior angle of a regular nonagon.
Example 10 Find the number of sides of a regular polygon, given that a) its exterior angle is 60o b) its interior angle is 135o
