Polygon
What is a 2D shape?

A two-dimensional shape can be defined as a flat plane figure or a shape

that has two dimensions – length and width
Polygons
Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes.
They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all
the lines connect up).
Types of Polygons
Types of Polygons
Types of Polygons
What is a diagonal?

A diagonal is a straight line connecting the opposite corners

of a polygon through its vertex.
Derivation
Pentagon
Number of sides in a pentagon = 5
Number of diagonals in a polygon = n(n-3)/2
= 5(5-3)/2
= 5(2)/2
=5

A pentagon will have 5 diagonals

Try yourself
1) Derive the number of diagonals for a Hexagon

We know that

Number of sides in a Hexagon = 6

Sum of all interior angles in a polygon
Sum of all interior angles of a polygon
Sum of all interior angles in a polygon = (n-2) x 180
Hexagon (Number of sides = 6)
Sum of all interior angles in a Hexagon = ( 6 - 2 ) x 180
= 4 x 180
= 720
Can you try yourself ???
Find the sum of all interior angles of a pentagon
Find the measure of the missing angle in the polygon
below
Try to find the missing angle in the polygon below
Exterior angle sum property
When the sides of the polygon are extended to get angles that lie outside the
polygon, the angles are called the Exterior angles of the polygon
Exterior angle sum
Cut out all the exterior angles of a polygon and join all the angles at the vertices.

Examine the angle formed y joining all the exterior angles.

The angle formed is a complete angle hence we can prove

Sum of all exterior angles in a polygon is 360 degree.

What is the measure of the exterior angle a in the given
polygon where the measures of the other angles are
given?
Sum of the given angles = 48+99+37+49+41

= 274

Sum of exterior angles = 360

274 + a = 360

a=360-274 =86
Find the missing angle of a polygon whose exterior angles
are as follows
Note
An interior angle and its corresponding exterior angle together forms a straight line
and measure 180 degree
Trapezium
1. It is a Quadrilateral
2. One pair of opposite sides are parallel
3. All angles will be of different measures
Isosceles Trapezium
Length of two non-parallel sides are equal (AD=BC)

Angles on the same sides of parallel sides are also equal in measure <D=<C

Diagonals in an isosceles trapezium are equal in length(AC=BD)

Find the length of the missing sides in the Iso.Trap below
Perimeter of the Trap=40cm
Sol

AD=BC(Non Parallel sides) ; AB=5cm and DC=20cm; Let AD=BC=x

AB+BC+CD+DA=40cm

5+x+20+x=40

25+2x=40

2x=40-25

2x=15

x=15/2

x=7.5cm
Adjacent sides in this diagram

AB=AD

BC=DC

AC is Perpendicular to BD
Perimeter of the Kite is 40cm.What are the length of the
other 3 sides if the length of its side is 15cm?
AB=AD (Adjacent sides) ; AD=15cm

CD=CB(Adjacent sides) Let CD=CB=x

AB+BC+CD+DA=40

15+X +X+15 =40

30 +2X =40

2X =40-30

2X =10

X =10/2

X =5cm
