1938 The Nineteen Hundred Corporation invents the rst washer with motorized agitation, ushering in a new era of time savings and convenience. 1929 Sears growing demand requires Upton Machine Company to merge with Nineteen Hundred Washer Company of Binghamton, New York. The new rm, The Nineteen Hundred Corporation, adds large manufacturing facilities in Michigan and New York.

1969 Whirlpool Corporation introduces the residential trash compactor, the rst totally new major home appliance to reach the marketplace in more than 30 years.

1999 Whirlpool Corporation agrees to donate a range and ENERGY STAR-qualied refrigerator to every Habitat for Humanity home built in North America.

2003 Whirlpool Corporation becomes the worlds rst appliance manufacturer to set a global greenhouse gas reduction target. 2006 Whirlpool Corporation is now the largest home appliance maker in the world with the purchase of Maytag.

1950 The Nineteen Hundred Corporation is renamed Whirlpool Corporation. The company adds automatic dryers to its product line. 1955 Whirlpool Corporation is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

1970 Whirlpool Corporation establishes the Ofce of Environmental Control, not only to develop more efcient products and methods of manufacturing, but to also work with government and civil society groups on social and environmental responsibility.

2001 KitchenAid brand partners with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to create the Cook for the Cure campaign.

2011 While Whirlpool Corporation appliances are sold worldwide, the United States continues to be the companys largest market in terms of revenue, manufacturing presence (nine U.S. manufacturing facilities), and number of employees (over 20,000).

2010 Whirlpool Corporation opens the World of Whirlpool, a new agship brand and product experience center in Chicago. Whirlpool Corporation announces a $120-million investment in building a new LEED-certied manufacturing facility in Cleveland, Tennessee. It is the single largest investment Whirlpool Corporation has made anywhere in the world, which reinforces its commitment to the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing.

1916 Upton Machine Company sells its rst order of washers to Sears, Roebuck & Co. beginning a long business relationship.

1911 Upton Machine Company is founded by Lou and Emory Upton in St. Joseph, Michigan, to produce electric motor-driven wringer washers.

1960 Whirlpool Corporation wins a NASA contract to design and build Americas rst experimental space kitchen; the company builds other food, waste and hygiene systems used in the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab space missions.
