Whitwam, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool, took initiative to bring about a change in the company’s corporate culture. • Also embedded innovation as a core competency. Background Note • Company was started in 1911 by three brothers-Frederick, Louis and Emory Upton. • Initially named Upton Machine Corporation established at St. Josephs, Michigan, USA. • Later changed to Whirlpool. • Entered into partnership with Sears, Roebuck and Co in 1916, Sears marketed washers manufactured by Upton. Background note contd.. • In 1925, Upton became the exclusive supplier of electric and gasoline powered washing machines for Sears. • In 1929 Upton merged with Nineteen Hundred Corp of New York, USA. • In 1948, Upton had dual distributors- marketed by Sears and by Nineteen Hundred. • In mid-1960s Whirlpool became one of the well- established brands in North America.
